The story of One Piece feels incomplete without the Straw Hat Pirates, even if we exclude Luffy. Not only does every member of the crew bring a fresh narrative to the series, but they also have their own side stories and growth arcs in the series – and one such belongs to the cook, Sanji.

Throughout the series, Sanji has some of the most intriguing fights – while some bring in comedy, others are pure narrative heavyweights. That being said, if we’ve caught your attention, here is every Sanji fight in the One Piece anime series, ranked by how impactful and visually pleasing it was.

11. Kuroobi Was the Opponent That Established Sanji as a Fighter

Sanji‘s fight against Kuroobi was one of the earliest displays that put Sanji on the One Piece map as a fighter rather than just a cook. Despite having a massive disadvantage of being underwater, Sanji manages to hold his breath and defeat the Fishman from Arlong’s crew.

What makes it more interesting is that Sanji refuses to use his hands at all during the fight. Not only does it make the fight intense, but it also foreshadows his signature style later to come in the series.

10. Sanji vs. Wanze Was the Perfect Mix of Comedy and Style

One of Sanji’s weirdest battles somehow became one of his most creative ones. During the Water 7 Arc, Sanji faces the CP7 agent and cook, Wanze. Wanze’s noodle-based fighting style forced Sanji to improvise, leading to the debut of his iconic “knife combat” cooking technique.

The fight was funny and action-packed at the same time, giving us the perfect blend of action comedy in the One Piece series. Furthermore, this is one of the very few early instances in which we were introduced to the CPs, who were a powerful group at the time of the narrative.

9. The Jabra Fight Was the Introduction of the Iconic Diable Jambe

Sanji vs. Jabra is one of the fights fans can never forget, despite Jabra being a minor villain in the series. The reason it is so iconic is that Sanji, for the very first time, introduces his iconic attack, the Diable Jambe.

Furthermore, no other villain in the series has pushed Sanji so much before, and this also turned out to be one of Sanji’s early serious battles. Despite Jabra’s attempts to trick him, pretending to be Robin’s brother, Sanji used his superior speed and strategy to land a final, powerful kick.

8. Fighting Absalom Showed One of Sanji’s Funniest Emotional Breakdowns

Going back to the Thriller Bark Arc, the Sanji vs. Absalom fight was one of the most intriguing battles from the arc, but also one of the most comedic. The fight revolved around Sanji’s rage over Absalom abusing invisibility for selfish reasons – it was more emotional than technical.

What makes the fight even more memorable is the fact that it featured one of the most absurd breakdowns Sanji had in the One Piece anime series. It also showcases Sanji’s chivalry and obsession with protecting women, a recurring theme throughout the series.

7. Sanji vs. Vergo: The New World’s First Sign of New Power Levels

Sanji vs. Vergo was one of the peak moments from the Punk Hazard Arc. The Donquixote Pirate was of a completely different league, and Sanji found him when the former was taking out the Marines. But his status is not the only thing that makes this fight so memorable.

Vergo is the first time Sanji faced someone with Haki, particularly Armament Haki. His hardening was so strong that it cracked Sanji’s bones. While Vergo goes on to fight Law, the fight shows Sanji’s durability and refusal to back down despite injury.

6. Sanji Debuted His Germa Raid Suit Against Page One

This battle is genuinely one of a kind, and we are not likely to see something like this in the anime series ever again. During the Wano Country Arc, Sanji faced off against one of Kaido’s top officers, Page One. However, it wasn’t really Sanji who fought him, but Vinsmoke Sanji.

Not only did Sanji come as Vinsmoke Sanji, but he also debuted his Germa Raid Suit, a legacy carried on by the Vinsmoke family. Seeing Sanji combine stealth, speed, and enhanced durability hinted at how dangerous he was becoming post the Whole Cake Island Arc.

5. Sanji vs. Bon Clay Was an Absolute Mirror Match From Alabasta

This was one of the most hilarious and tough battles Sanji had to fight in the early days of the series, during the Alabasta Arc. Sanji faced off against Bon Clay (Mr. 2) in one of the toughest battles; both fighters were equally matched in strength and kicking power. However, Bon Clay had an ace up his sleeve.

Knowing about his “Nami weakness”, Bon Clay constantly transformed into her, forcing Sanji to leave openings for him to attack. However, after intense, sustained combat where both took severe damage, Sanji landed a final, devastating kick, leaving both on the brink of collapse, with Bon Clay eventually spinning out of control into a wall.

4. Sanji vs. Kizaru: Short but Substantial to Power Scaling

This was less of a fight and more like a confrontation between the Straw Hat Pirates’ Sanji and Admiral Kizaru during the Egghead Island Arc. While this wasn’t really a 1v1 between them, it still serves as a massive pivotal point, especially in terms of the power scaling ladder.

Sanji blocking and deflecting an Admiral-level attack is enough to place him high up the powerscaling ladder. Before this, he was mostly an average-level fighter with not really much exponential growth like Zoro or Luffy, but Egghead finally showed Sanji operating at a truly elite level against top-tier threats.

3. Sanji Taking on Doflamingo Was a Showcase of His Bravery

While Kizaru’s was mostly a simple confrontation, Sanji vs. Doflamingo was clearly a one-sided landslide fight. However, this fight drastically mattered as it established Sanji’s personal maturity in the series, especially his bravery. He attacked Doflamingo head-on to protect the Straw Hats despite the overwhelming power gap.

If we really think about it, the scene actually did both of them favors in the character arc narratives – Doflamingo got immediate credibility as a former Warlord, who are supposed to be absolute powerhouses, and it also gave Sanji’s character an esteem boost among the fans, as looking fearless.

2. Fighting Queen Is the Best Sanji Solo Fight in One Piece So Far

Sanji vs. Queen from One Piece | Credits: Toei Animation

This was hands down one of the best Sanji solo fights in the One Piece anime so far. His fight against Queen resolved years of character conflict surrounding Germa enhancements and Sanji’s fear of losing his humanity. This is also the fight that evolved his trusted and powerful attack in the arsenal, Diable Jambe, to a more powerful Ifrit Jambe.

Once Ifrit Jambe was activated, Sanji reached an entirely new tier. Not even narratively, the fight was one of the best production moments of Toei Animation in the series, from masterful choreography to stunning animation. This was the payoff to hundreds of chapters of buildup around his lineage and identity crisis.

1. Sanji vs. Luffy Was Peak One Piece Character Writing

The Sanji vs. Luffy fight was everything we ever wanted from the One Piece anime series – animation, action, drama, emotions, and narrative exploration – it was a complete package. Sanji beating up Luffy while crying inside remains one of the most painful scenes in the series, as the fight wasn’t about power; it was about sacrifice, guilt, and Sanji trying to sever his ties to protect the crew.

This was not a fight. Sanji beating down a Luffy who just stood there to take it all can never be called a fight. However, it was and might even remain the most powerful Sanji scene in the entire One Piece anime.
