The Espada are the strongest Arrancar in Bleach, each representing a special aspect of death and holding a rank from zero to nine, roughly based on the extent of their spiritual power. They were the elite soldiers who served under one of the greatest villains, Sosuke Aizen, and every one of them had a unique personality and fighting style that shaped the story.

However, considering the fact that they played antagonistic roles within the Bleach narrative, their deaths and defeats were confirmed long ago. Thus, here is a list of every Espada and how they succumbed to death in Bleach, ranked from worst to best in terms of development, strength portrayal, and emotional impact.

10. Yammy Llargo

Yammy started as the 10th Espada in Bleach, but he later became Espada 0 when he released the full extent of his power. His huge size and overwhelming physical strength made him a dangerous opponent, but he did not carry much strategy or intelligence, thus mainly relying on brute force, which often put him at a disadvantage against skilled fighters.

His defeat is one of the least memorable because most of it happens off-screen. Byakuya Kuchiki and Kenpachi Zaraki face him in Hueco Mundo, and the two Soul Reapers finished the fight rather quickly. However, the final moments of the battle are not shown in detail, and Yammy does not get a dramatic final moment.

9. Aaroniero Arruruerie

Aaroniero was the 9th Espada and the only Gillian-class Hollow among the group. His power allowed him to absorb other Hollows and gain their abilities. The most important soul he absorbed was Kaien Shiba. This created a strong emotional conflict when he fought Rukia Kuchiki because she cared deeply for Kaien, as he was her mentor.

He dies during his fight with Rukia after she realizes that he was lying about Kaien. Rukia destroyed his helmet, and the open air entered the chamber, because of which his true form couldn’t survive the light, so his body melted away. Thus, even though Rukia defeated him, suffocation became the real cause of his death.

8. Szayelaporro Granz

Szayelaporro was the 8th Espada and a genius scientist who enjoyed experimenting on his enemies and used abilities related to biology, cloning, and body control. He was proud of his intelligence and often underestimated others. His personality and talent made him similar to Mayuri Kurotsuchi, which led to an interesting battle between the two in Bleach.

Szayelaporro’s death was brutal and ironic, as after playing with Renji and Uryu, Szayelaporro tried the same tricks on Mayuri. However, Mayuri countered everything with ease, and once Szayelaporro was trapped and helpless, Mayuri used a drug that slowed down his sense of time, forcing him to feel long suffering in a short moment.

7. Zommari Rureaux

Zommari was the 7th Espada and claimed to be the fastest among the Arrancar in Bleach. He valued discipline and meditation, and he saw himself as above Soul Reapers. His ability allowed him to take control of a target by marking it with an eye-shaped seal. Zommari essentially believed that the Arrancar were a noble race, and he carried a deep hatred for Soul Reapers.

He fought Byakuya Kuchiki and quickly realized that speed alone was not enough for him. Byakuya managed to counter his movements and destroy most of Zommari’s body, which more or less rendered him useless. Byakuya ended the fight with a clean strike, making Zommari’s death dramatic but quick.

6. Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez (Defeated but Alive)

Grimmjow was the 6th Espada and one of the most popular characters in the entire Bleach series. He represented destruction and lived for battle. Grimmjow respects strength above all else, which is why his rivalry with Ichigo Kurosaki became so important within the story. He does not follow Aizen out of loyalty but out of a desire for challenge and power.

After being taken down by Ichigo, Grimmjow is left alive, but his defeat feels like the end of his role as an enemy. He survives and returns later in the story during the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, but this moment marks the end of his time as a major threat. He battles Askin Nakk Le Vaar and brings out another thrilling clash.

5. Nnoitora Gilga

Nnoitora was the 5th Espada and one of the most violent members of the Arrancar group. He had the hardest hierro of all the Espada, which made him extremely difficult to injure, and he believed that only strength matters, but what truly defined his character was his pride as an Espada in Bleach and his cruelty as an antagonistic character.

His death occurred during his battle with Kenpachi Zaraki. The fight was fierce and pushed both fighters to their limits. However, Kenpachi eventually uses both hands on his sword, showing how serious the fight has become, and takes down Nnoitora. Even after being mortally wounded, Nnoitora refused to stop fighting, but his body finally gave out, and Kenpachi delivered the last blow.

4. Ulquiorra Cifer

Ulquiorra was the 4th Espada and one of Aizen’s most powerful followers in Bleach. He represented nihilism and believed that life has no meaning, but his calm personality and high intelligence made him very different from the other Espada. He could regenerate most of his body and even had a rare second Resurrection form that made him extremely dangerous.

Ulquiorra’s death was one of the most emotional moments in Bleach. After his fight with Ichigo reaches its peak, Ichigo’s Hollow form defeated him, and as Ulquiorra begins to fade away, he finally understands human feelings, something he once believed did not exist. He reaches out toward Orihime before turning to dust, which results in a quiet and heartbreaking moment.

3. Tier Harribel (Defeated but Alive)

Harribel was the 3rd Espada and one of the few Arrancar who showed kindness in Bleach. She represented sacrifice and deeply cared for her fraccion. Her water-based powers made her a strong and graceful fighter as she fought against Toshiro Hitsugaya and became the only surviving Espada aside from Grimmjow.

She was defeated during the Fake Karakura Town battle because of a betrayal, but was not killed. After failing to win her battle against the Soul Reaper captain, Aizen suddenly turned on her, and he cut her across the torso and let her fall into the depths below Las Noches. She survived and later became the ruler of Hueco Mundo until she was captured by Yhwach’s forces.

2. Baraggan Louisenbairn

Baraggan was the 2nd Espada and the former king of Hueco Mundo before Aizen took control of the mysterious place in Bleach. He represented aging and decay, and his power created a black mist that rots anything it touches. Baraggan carried himself like a ruler and held deep anger toward Aizen for stealing his throne.

His death was a perfect form of poetic justice. During his fight with Soul Reapers, Hachigen reflected Baraggan’s own decay mist back into his body, and Baraggan could not stop his own power from consuming him. As he breaks apart, he curses Aizen with his final breath, and his end is portrayed in a symbolic and fitting manner, just like a fallen king.

1. Coyote Starrk

Starrk was the 1st Espada and the strongest among them in Bleach. His aspect was loneliness, and his spiritual pressure was so strong that it killed other Hollows, which forced him to split his soul into two beings, himself and Lilynette. Starrk did not enjoy fighting and only wanted companionship, which made him the most human of the Espada.

His death was the most emotional of the group. During his battle with Shunsui Kyoraku, Starrk fought with a growing sense of sadness, and after he was fatally wounded, he remembered how he and Lilynette first came together, and in his final moment, he wondered if he ever truly had friends, making it a sad demise.
