Who is Miyamoto Musashi?
Miyamoto Musashi is hands-down one of the most famous swordsmen in Japanese history and is often considered a Kensei (Sword Saint) of Japan. He was a strategist, artist, and a writer ronin who spent decades perfecting his swordmanship skills and wandering through Japan, challenging anyone with a reputation and ultimately winning over 60 duels.
What makes Musashi more than just a legendary fighter is his philosophy of double sword fighting style, the Niten Ichi-Ryu (loosely translated to School of Two Heavens as One), and his immortal classic, Go Rin No Sho (The Book of Five Rings), which is not just about sword techniques but a deep dive into strategy, tactics, and philosophy.

While this might sound like a stretch but there are some pretty cool historical coincidences that show that there is a massive connection between the legendary swordsman and Ghost of Yotei. Musashi doesn’t actually appear as himself in the game; instead, he is represented through the character of Takezo, the Unrivaled, who has an entire mythic tale dedicated to him, which involves fighting his disciples and ultimately fighting the master. Musashi also has some well-known aliases, which include the name Shinmen Takezo.
In Ghost of Yotei, Takezo is a legendary swordsman who fights with two blades, and after defeating him, you unlock the Dual Katana Spirit Attack, which is probably a clear homage to Musashi’s signature technique of using both his simultaneously to win duels. Musashi was also famously claimed to have never lost a duel, so the game’s use of “The Unrivaled” title ties Takezo and Musashi with the same undefeated tier.

Similar to Takezo’s story in Ghost of Yotei, Musashi also spent his early adult life on a warrior’s pilgrimage, where he wandered the land of Japan and honed his skills through multiple duels and the entire questline of chasing Takezo’s disciples across the map, perfectly capturing the theme of the wandering warrior.
