Batman fans should forever feel grateful that Warner Bros. Pictures canceled a planned Superman movie in the 2000s, as Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy would have never happened otherwise.

Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy encompasses 2005’s Batman Begins, 2008’s The Dark Knight, and 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, all of which DC fans widely consider to be some of the best Batman movies ever, especially when it comes to The Dark Knight.

Why will Batman fans be glad a Superman movie was canceled?

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, per World of Reel, Nolan revealed that Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises only happened after Warner Bros. Pictures canceled a Superman movie that was going to be directed by Wolfgang Petersen.

“I was originally hired by Warner Bros. to direct Troy. Wolfgang [Petersen] had developed it, and so when the studio decided not to proceed with his superhero movie [Batman Vs Superman], he wanted it back,” Nolan said.

Troy is a 2004 epic historical action film written by David Benioff. The cast of that movie includes Brad Pitt as Achilles, Eric Bana as Hector, Orlando Bloom as Paris, Diane Kruger as Helen, Brian Cox as Agamemnon, Sean Bean as Odysseus, Brendan Gleeson as Menelaus, Rose Byrne as Briseis, Peter O’Toole as Priam, and more. The film was a big box office hit for Warner Bros. and Peterson, as it grossed $497.4 million worldwide. Critical response to the film was mixed, though it did score a nomination for Best Costume Design at the 77th Academy Awards.

Nolan is also known for making 1998’s Following, 2000’s Memento, 2002’s Insomnia, 2006’s The Prestige, 2010’s Inception, 2014’s Interstellar, 2017’s Dunkirk, 2020’s Tenet, and 2023’s Oppenheimer. His next movie, The Odyssey, arrives in United States theaters on July 17, 2026.
