House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 7 digs into these issues, as the Blacks discover it is not only the might of the dragons that is needed to rule the Seven Kingdoms.

What happens in House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 7?
Helaena Targaryen (Phia Saban) walks through the courtyard of King’s Landing, observing a horse until the gates of the city open. She’s awakened from her dream by Rhaenyra, who relays that they have not heard from Alicent since she left. Helaena admits she does not like riding dragons, believing that they alter people in the core. Rhaenyra tells her it is possible, but instead changes the conversation to her abilities as a dreamer. Rather than humor Rhaenyra’s questions about the current conflict, Helaena falls silent as her sister begs for answers to win the war.
In Harrenhal, Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) continues to rehabilitate himself after his injuries. He stumbles as Alicent (Olivia Cooke) discovers him in the castle. She tells him that he is her best and “truest” son, but Aemond wonders what happened to Aegon. Alicent does not know, but to try to unbalance him, she returns his kiss from earlier in the season. They start to have sex when Aemond awakens to realize it was Alys Rivers all along. She asks what he has seen as he leaves the room. In Harrenhal, he finds his actual mother looking for him.
The Winter Wolves and Tullys march on Tumbleton, carrying Criston Cole’s head on a spike. Gwayne Hightower (Freddie Fox) rushes back to Trumbleton to relay what he’s seen to Ormund (James Norton). Ormund and Ser Jon Roxton hear of the twenty thousand soldiers marching on their position, but reveal they have something to bring Rhaenyra down.
Daemon (Matt Smith) arrives at the Vale, demanding Jeyne Arryn (Amanda Collin) tell him where Rhaena (Phoebe Campbell) hides. Jeyne reveals that she sent for Daemon because she can no longer control the rumors of the dragonrider living “amongst the nettles.” He asks her for a day to break the news, and Jeyne tells him where Rhaena will be searching for Vhagar.
Baela (Bethany Antonia) and Addam (Clinton Liberty) continue their search, with Baela complaining about her standing with Rhaenyra. Addam uses this to bring up his issue of legitimization, telling her that he would need it if he were to woo a highborn lady. Baela thinks that Alyn told his brother about their recent tryst, but Addam is caught off-guard. However, their conversation is interrupted when a dragon flies in the distance, and Baela spots Sheepstealer.
Alicent follows Aemond through the castle, telling him of her harrowing journey and trying to convince him of Ser Adrian’s loyalty. Aemond stops and grabs her, trying to decipher if it is actually his mother or Alys. Unbeknownst to her, the language she uses is the same as Alys. Ser Adrian and Aemond meet next to the Godwood, but Aemond stabs him in the throat. He tells Alicent that he cannot trust anyone. Alys arrives to the party, telling them supper is ready.
Ormund hosts a dinner for Corlys, with Daeron by his side. Corlys remains skeptical of Ormund’s plans, believing this is a final meal before his execution. The Hightower lord knows that the Velaryon men are unlikely to help quell unrest in King’s Landing if Corlys remains at Tumbleton. Daeron admits he does not see how this helps them against the Winter Wolves, which elicits a death stare from his uncle. Rather than let Ormund continue to rant at him, Corlys leaves for his cell.
After the meal, Daeron relays the events of the dinner to Gwayne. Together they realize that they are going to die when the Winter Wolves arrive if nothing else shifts “on the board.” Gwayne laments that some men believe their glory overshadows the common good. He urges Daeron to flee, but his nephew refuses.
Lord Manderly (Dan Fogler) voices his frustration with the campaign against him in the city. He blames Rhaenyra for naming him Master of Coin and then refusing to follow his advice, accusing her of using him as a scapegoat. Rhaenyra remains distracted, trying to change the subject to Harrenhal, Daemon, or Corlys. Sabitha Frey (Sarah Woodward) asks about Harrenhal’s succession, and Rhaenyra tells her to send soldiers to take the castle, even if Ser Adrian was successful.
The Small Council is interrupted when Baela and Addam enter the chambers. They reveal they’ve spotted Sheepstealer, but more importantly, he still has a rider. Mysaria meets with Rhaenyra after the meeting, working to convince the queen that Daemon cannot be trusted. He’s missing when this news comes to pass, after having lied about killing the rider. Rhaenyra tries to defend her husband, but Mysaria questions this approach.
Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney), Larys (Matthew Needham), and Tyland (Jefferson Hall) ride towards the ship to the East. However, the road is blocked by many fleeing Rhaenyra’s allies, the Mootons. Tyland realizes they must return to Rook’s Rest, even if there’s a chance they have been discovered. However, when they try to return, they find the men of Rook’s Rest have also abandoned the castle. While Larys and Tyland argue about the next stops, Aegon tells them both to flee. He will not die as a begger or with rumors of being murdered by his brother. This stand emboldens Tyland to stay with the King, while Larys leaves with the other soldiers. Aegon and Tyland walk into the woods to find Sunfyre.
Alicent joins Aemond and Alys for dinner. While Alicent remains skeptical of Alys, Aemond tells his mother that Alys saved his life. He admits that he wants to make Harrenhal his seat from where he will rule. Aemond wishes his mother would stay with them, but Alys tries to send her away. He refuses, despite Alys’ warning that Alicent is here to kill him. Away from the new lovers, Alicent finds poisonous berries near the Godwood.
Daemon and Caraxes fly after Sheepstealer. After they get the dragon to land, Daemon and Rhaena fight about the next steps. While Daemon remains angry with his daughter, Rhaena admits she’s going after Vhagar. If she kills the dragon, she can sue for peace, and if she dies, her debt to Rhaenyra will be repaid. Daemon counters, telling her that they might be able to bring down Vhagar together.
Their fight is interrupted with the arrival of Rhaenyra and Addam. To hide Rhaena’s identity, Daemon tells her to run. Addam lands and chases after Rhaena on foot while Rhaenyra and Daemon fight. However, when it is revealed Rhaena was Sheepstealer’s rider, Rhaenyra prepares to kill her stepdaughter. Instead, Sheepstealer comes to its rider’s defense, causing a battle between all four dragons on the ground. Each dragon takes gashing wounds, but eventually Sheepstealer escapes, while Rhaena joins Rhaenyra on dragonback.
In the Red Keep, Mysaria attempts to woo her former callgirl, Sylvi (Michelle Bonnard), by showing her the throne room. Mysaria explains that the smallfolk should come to her as a proxy because the queen no longer wishes to meet with them. Sylvi questions Mysaria’s true power and if her former madam has lost her way with proximity to power. She warns that Mysaria might believe she’s fighting for the commonfolk, but the highborn will never forget where she came from.
Back at King’s Landing, Rhaenyra sends Rhaena to a guarded room. When he returns to King’s Landing, Daemon meets with Rhaenyra and tries to explain his actions. He reminds her that it was her favor, not his, that Rhaena had been trying to win. Rhaenyra sends him away. Elsewhere in the castle, Rhaena apologizes to Baela for her actions. To her surprise, her sister embraces her, telling her they’ll begin anew. In the streets, Alyn is presented with a box, which seemingly contains Coryls’ finger and his ring as ruler of Driftmark.
Alicent meets with Aemond, telling him she’s willing to leave Harrenhal if he asks her to. She’s brought him wine to help him fall asleep. Before Aemond drinks, he admits to Alicent that he tried to kill Aegon. She calls him foolish, but she already knew his intention. He later stumbles into Alys’ quarters, clearly dying from the poison. Alys calls him an idiot while Alicent tries to sneak out of Harrenahal.
Helaena dreams of childbirth, where her son is taken away from her. She then sees a vision of herself on dragonback, where the people of King’s Landing charge at her before she tells Dreamfyre to burn the people. In her final dream, she plays in a field with her children as a solar eclipse leads to snowfall. The fog rolls in to surround her.
Rhaenyra awakens in the middle of the night to throw the skull of the fake rider into the fire. She then meets with Mysaria, revealing that Daemon hid Rhaena from her. This starts a fight between the women, with Mysaria alleging that Daemon will lie to her to gain power, while Rhaenyra accuses her Mistress of Whispers of the same. Realizing that her queen needs reassurance, Mysaria tells her about the greatness that awaits. They kiss and go to bed.
Sitting by a fire, Tyland and Aegon see an army emerge from the woods. The soldiers were led by the Mooton forces. They recognize Tyland and threaten to torture him until he gives them the location of the gold. Aegon considers running one last time but stands and proclaims his identity. As he does so, Sunfyre emerges from the woods, alive. Seeing his dragon has returned, he burns the soldiers as they attempt to flee.
Sitting by his own campfire, Ulf drinks an ale. He compliments Ormund Hightower, who thanks him for the compliment. Ormund reveals this is not their first discussion but one of several. He then reveals that his spies in King’s Landing saw Daemon kicking Ulf down in the streets. Ormund tells Ulf that Rhaenyra only thinks of him as a tool, not only promising Ulf a lordship but also the rule of Driftmark. Ulf agrees, promising to burn his new enemies.
Is House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 7 worth watching?
Yes, the recent episode of House of the Dragon fundamentally changes the power of each side of the battle. Unsurprisingly, Ormund is at the center of it all once again, proving devastating in his choices to unend Westeros in his own pursuit of power. However, unlike Rhaenyra’s obvious hope for victory, Ormund has made his happen through effective backstabbing and smooth talking.
Back in “Rhaenyra Triumphant,” it felt clear that the weight of the crown was maybe something our protagonist has not actually been ready for. By the end of House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 7, we can see that she’s starting to crumble emotionally and mentally. Emma D’Arcy puts on a clinic again, this time showing the true darkness of seeking validation over pursuing vision. At every turn, she wants to be told of great victories, successful missions, and loyalty. It is only through lies from Misaryia that Rhaenyra finds solace. That is a dangerous game that she’s playing.
Meanwhile, Ormund understands just how weak Rhaenyra has found herself. Without Corlys, she has no mechanism to keep the factions in check. The rest of her council are striving for their own power, from Daemon asserting his familial right over his queen’s vengeance to knighting the dragon riders of undisplined upbringings. There’s a reason he could easily sway Ulf. We know it has not been one conversation, but several that have gone on for some time. Perhaps more importantly, Ormund knows he does not need to follow through on his promise for Ulf. He knows he simply needs to feel the respect Ulf believes he’s earned.
Simultaneously, the dragon math changes in a flash. It seemed like House of the Dragon was leaning towards changing Rhaena into “Nettles,” a popular character in the book. With her losing Sheepstealer by the end of the episode, that might not be the case any longer. Alongside that choice, Ulf has been swayed to the Greens. Unbeknownst to anyone, Aegon has reclaimed a burned and damaged Sunfyre (who seemingly returned to him at the time he acknowledges his divine right). Adding two to the Greens and removing one from the blacks, what seemed like an unsupportable force has changed directions once again.
On the edge of all these issues is the battle between Alicent and Aemond. The boy wants to love his mother, literally, in ways that were disturbing. Yet she still knows his weaknesses and used them against him to nearly kill her son. Meanwhile, Alys continues to prod and poke at the boy. The Harrenhal stories have never really worked, but this one continues to feel like tires spinning. We know that Aemond is not going to die like that, so now the question to ask is how will he respond?
Going into the Season 3 finale next week, we’re expecting some fireworks and deaths. How many will remain an open question, and how far will we go with the betrayal from Ulf? Does Tyland actually believe in Aegon? Or did his bloodlust, intensified by the return of his dragon, remind Tyland of the danger from his ally? How will Aemond respond to his mother’s attempted assassination? Finally, what will Rhaenyra do if the White Wolves cannot take Tumbleton?
