Little Brother seems like a forgotten kind of Hollywood comedy. It is mean and anxious and operates on the assumption that being an adult is nothing more than putting on a front. What is even more intriguing about this comedy is its timing. This is the age of streaming services being the only safe harbor for medium-budget adult comedies deemed too edgy for Hollywood studios to touch because of their inherent risk factor.

What Is Little Brother About?

Little Brother mainly focuses on the relationship between Rudd and Marcus (per Tudum). Rudd is a successful real estate agent who lives a blessed life with his wife, Deirdre (Michelle Monaghan). But Rudd’s peace is shattered when Marcus (Eric André) comes into his life. The title of the movie suggests the two are brothers, but no. The title comes from a childhood mentorship program.

The idea of the movie reminds us of old nightmare-guest comedies. André himself has described the film as “What About Bob? meets Parasite” (per Entertainment Weekly). This may sound odd at first, but then you realize both movies, in their own way, dealt with class panic. Eric André, though, has a comedic rhythm that depends on detonating social norms.

He has a perfect career, a perfect marriage, a perfect amount of money, and everything else is perfect too. But Marcus dismantles all this like a virus attacks the immune system. He overshares, invades privacy and personal spaces, throws tantrums, behaves like an overgrown child in general, and ruins conversations.

The trailer promises a film that is almost abrasive. André’s performance especially carries the energy of someone purposely stress-testing another person’s identity.
