Re:ZERO – Starting Life in Another World – is finally back with another season. In the last season, there was a huge confrontation with the Witch’s Cult, and a lot of lives were lost. Furthermore, in the pure Re:ZERO style, it ended with a huge cliffhanger.

This new episode is finally addressing that cliffhanger, along with some loose ends that were to be tied up, such as the case with Garfield’s mother. Let’s dive into the review of the first episode.

Everyone Tries to Remember Julius

The episode started with everyone present addressing the Season 3 cliffhanger: no one remembers Julius except Subaru. Reinhard mentions that if Julius is wearing the knight’s uniform, they could’ve been associates; in fact, they could’ve been close friends.

Furthermore, Julius is not the only one with that problem. Rem is also under the influence of Authority of Gluttony, and she is in a state of coma. In fact, many people during the battle ended up in similar states. Anastasia takes the opportunity to suggest a proposal.

Subaru And Others Head Out To Pleiades Watchtower

It is said that in the Pleiades Watchtower resides a sage named Shaula. She is the new character who will be introduced properly this season. She is said to be all-knowing and could have the information needed to cure the situation created by Gluttony.

However, Otto mentions how no one is able to actually reach that place, not even Reinhard, who is one of the strongest characters in the entire franchise. Reinhard mentions that there was a mysterious barrier set in place, and Reinhard simply couldn’t reach the place, no matter how long he walked.

Soon after that, Subaru and others make their journey towards Pleiadas Watchtower in order to cure everyone.

Anastasia’s True Identity is Revealed in a Shocking Manner

Anastasia from Re:ZERO | Credit: White Fox

During their journey, when Anastasia and Subaru are alone by a small fire, Subaru says he knows Anastasia is not the real Anastasia. However, that was not the actual surprise in this episode. “Anastasia” mentions that she is actually “Echidna”, which gives Subaru traumatic flashbacks, and he almost loses it.

It is the curveballs like these that make this anime one of the best isekai anime of all time. Furthermore, Anastasia (Echidna) mentions that she is not the Echidna that Subaru thinks she is, and that she means no harm. She loves the real Anastasia deeply and only wishes for her good health.

Hence, it turns out that another reason for going to the Pleiades Watchtower is so that Echidna can find a way to return Anastasia’s body to her.

Garfield’s Actual Reunion With His Mother

Garfield from Re:ZERO | Credit: White Fox

There is much more to this anime than it being a standard Isekai anime. One of the best moments of this episode didn’t even involve Subaru, who is the protagonist of this isekai masterpiece. Instead, it involved Garfield.

In the previous season, Garfield found out that his mother is actually living a whole new life, without having any memories of the past. In the new episode, Garfield finally musters the courage to talk to her. In a very emotional moment, he simply started crying, calling her “mom” again and again. Truly speaking, it made me tear up as well.

Garfield’s mother did, in fact, talk to her as a mother would comfort her child, and when Garfield felt all good, he returned to help everyone.

This was the perfect first episode, setting the stage for all that’s to come. We finally saw that there are some things not even Reinhard can do, Garfield finally got to cry his heart out in front of his mother, and new plot lines were introduced with Anastasia.

While it didn’t have that much action, this anime doesn’t really focus on that. The entire focus was on the start of another journey, and Garfield was finally facing his mother. Furthermore, the best part about the episode was how it picked up so naturally after the events of Season 3. However, it did make sure you keep in mind to watch it every Wednesday. Anyways, what are your own thoughts on this episode? Let us know in the comments.
