The HBO sports drama Heated Rivalry has quickly become one of the most talked-about series of 2025–26, not just for its on-field action and character drama, but for the intense conversations it has generated off-screen. In a new interview, star Hudson Williams discussed how some viewers have been criticizing the show for its graphic and intimate scenes.
While on Andy Cohen Live, the actor pointed out:
If this were straight s*x scenes, people would be like, ‘Oh, it’s not [graphic].’ We don’t see anything, you know? Like there are no b**bs in the show. There’s no d*cks in the show. There’s just a lot of b*tt… If they were straight intimate scenes, it wouldn’t be talked about in that way.
While the Canadian sports romantic drama has been getting criticized, Williams’ comments also point towards the double standards in how critics have treated Heated Rivalry compared to another Netflix juggernaut, Elite.
Despite Elite featuring gay couples and NSFW content throughout its run, it has not generated similar mainstream backlash. Elite debuted in 2018 and quickly became known for a mix of teen drama, thriller elements, and frank portrayals of sexuality. Yet, the mainstream has not subjected the show to the same level of commentary as the HBO show.
Hudson Williams Reveals He is Getting Texts From Closeted Athletes
Heated Rivarly has become one of the most-talked-about shows in recent times. Adding another layer to the discourse, Hudson Williams shared that the show’s themes resonated so much with fans that he has been receiving private messages and texts from closeted athletes and performers.
On Andy Cohen Live, Williams remarked:
It’s definitely the people who reach out, somewhat anonymously, who are like, ‘I’m a professional player and I’m still in the closet.’ They’re reaching out to Rachel, our author, who’ll then relay these lovely anonymous emails. And sometimes they’re just reaching out privately through Instagram. Those ones are the ones that really just kind of hit you and [you] go, ‘Oh, this is a fun show and it’s celebratory, but also sometimes it’s just hitting people right in the nerve.’
This kind of viewer response underscores why representation matters. Williams’s disclosure that closeted athletes are reaching out highlights that Heated Rivalry may be doing more than just entertaining, even when it attracts criticism from some quarters.

Connor Storrie, who plays Ilya Rozanov in Heated Rivalry, has also recently weighed in on both the show’s impact and his own future plans. The actor discussed staying off-grid and not letting his popularity get to him, stating that he is trying to keep moving and remain mindful, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
As for his future steps, he recently signed with CAA this week, and remarked:
A big part of my career and what I want to do that is right now with the show is I write and direct myself. I’m in the middle of doing an iPhone feature, this super indie kind of Sean Baker-esque film because I’m making it on an iPhone. I just want to develop as a filmmaker, too, alongside Heated Rivalry. I consider myself somewhat of a character actor in the sense that I really like to transform, as seen on the show. I want to be able to do that again too, see what that’s all about.
He also revealed that he is getting several offers and opportunities and is currently exploring his options while trying to make time in his busy schedule to read scripts.
