James Wan is a legend when it comes to horror movies. How bad does a movie have to be for the legendary director to walk out halfway through the screening? Well, ask The Mummy reboot director Lee Cronin.
The synopsis of the upcoming horror reboot has been revealed by Feature First, and it is not looking good. According to the report, the film follows a family consisting of two adults (Jack Reynor and Laia Costa), their son, and their daughter.
However, the daughter goes missing after a woman curses her, and the family moves on. 8 years later, a sarcophagus is discovered containing the daughter’s body, and she is surprisingly alive! Coming back and living with her family, something evil has followed her from the desert, and James Wan cannot get any more of it.
According to the report, the film had a test screening, which did not exactly sit well with the audience. The Conjuring director James Wan even walked out of the theater halfway through the movie. Naturally, the film is expected not to perform that well.
Lee Cronin Ups the Gore With a “Vile scene” in The Mummy Reboot

Although fans loved Lee Cronin as a director for Evil Dead Rise in 2023, it seems that the director has decided to up the gore with The Mummy reboot. As reported by Feature First, there is a very, very gory scene during a sequence in the movie.
Comparing the scene to The Substance and Bring Her Back, the audience simply did not enjoy this particular scene at all. The scene in question follows a scorpion that crawls into somebody’s mouth and severs their vocal cords.
This leads someone to stick their fingers down that person’s throat and press on their cords, allowing them to speak. Yeah… count me out of this film. But not just James Wan, it seems that The Mummy reboot might be going in the wrong direction.
This Isn’t The Mummy Reboot Fans Had Been Waiting For
It seems as if reboots are completely ignoring the core of the original films. Although movies are being modernized as the year goes by, The Mummy Reboot is completely different from the first Mummy movie that came out in 1999.
The Brendan Fraser movies were adventurous and had a cool feel to them. Although scary at times, it wasn’t overtly gory or disgusting. From the camel racing in the 1999 movie to the sandstorm that Imhotep brings in the sequel, the films gave a sense of wonder and amazement.
Even the Tom Cruise remake had a sense of adventure, thrill, disaster, and history in it, but it was never scary or gory. The Lee Cronin remake seems like Evil Dead: Egypt, and is clearly not the movie that fans were so dearly hoping for.
Of course, Cronin has his fans around the world, and there are many who would enjoy this gore-filled fest. But for some (like me), The Mummy franchise will always be about screwing up as an archeologist, and not being cursed by randoms in the desert.
