The news might come as a disappointing blow to Marvel fans, but after years of delays, rewrites, and behind-the-scenes struggles, Mahershala Ali’s long-awaited Blade solo movie has reportedly been canceled. The project was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, and quickly became one of Marvel Studios’ most exciting promises.
But now, the news comes from industry insider Jeff Sneider, who claimed on The Hot Mic podcast that the film is effectively “dead”. While he later clarified that this information is still a rumor and not officially confirmed by Marvel, the statement has sent shockwaves through the fandom.
Blade is dead. It’s a rumor. He will not be introduced in a solo movie.
With Blade now seemingly off the table, attention has shifted toward what’s next for Mahershala Ali in the superhero world. And guess what? Fans are already pitching new ideas, and one Justice League role, in particular, has started gaining traction.
Fans Champion Mahershala Ali as the Perfect Martian Manhunter
With Marvel’s Blade reportedly shelved, many fans have turned their attention to DC and started pitching Mahershala Ali for a major Justice League role. On social media, Ali is being widely fan-cast as Martian Manhunter, one of DC’s most thoughtful and powerful heroes, a character previously donned by Harry Lennix.
It seems that the fan casting is coming from a place where, based on Ali’s calm presence, deep voice, and emotional weight in his performance, people are hoping for James Gunn to cast him as Martian Manhunter. And since the character is known as the heart and conscience of the Justice League, fans believe Ali can prove his worth in this role.

Most importantly, with James Gunn now shaping the DC Universe, and the Blade movie being reportedly cancelled, the timing seems just right. People believe that if Ali gets cast in the role, he won’t suffer scheduling conflicts and will be able to portray the character with depth and earn deserving respect.
Mahershala Ali’s Blade Is Expected to Return in Midnight Sons
Meanwhile, despite the heartbreaking update on a Blade solo movie, Jeff Sneider mentioned that Mahershala Ali may not be done with Marvel just yet. On the podcast, Sneider noted that while Blade would no longer be introduced through a standalone film, the character could still appear in a future Midnight Sons project.

Sneider claimed that Marvel plans to bring Blade into the MCU as part of the supernatural team rather than giving him his own origin story. But so far neither of Jeff Sneider’s comments has been confirmed by Marvel. Even then his statements have sparked debate about Ali, and his character’s future.
I’m hearing Blade is dead and that it is a Midnight Sons movie… He’ll be introduced in Midnight Sons.
As for the Midnight Sons movie, insider Daniel Richtman reported back in 2024 that Marvel Studios began accelerating development on the film, and was looking for a director. Since then, although updates on the film have been scarce, it now seems that the MCU might actually merge Blade with the film.
Do you think Mahershala Ali will be perfect as Martian Manhunter, or do you have other suggestions? Let us know in the comments.
