As predicted by box office trackers, Zootopia 2 is off to a flying start, amassing a whopping $10.2 million from its Tuesday previews alone. It has now registered the second-highest preview start for a Walt Disney Animation movie, beating Frozen 2‘s $8.5 million gross. In the wake of a strong debut, the movie is now poised to pull in $125-150 million in gross from its five-day opening (via Variety).
Although an impressive figure nonetheless, as the Disney sequel is expected to take the crown for the biggest opening of the year so far, it’s still trailing behind Moana 2, which premiered last year during the Thanksgiving window.
Zootopia 2 Still Fell Short of Moana 2 Despite Huge Projections
Despite nabbing the second spot by speeding past Frozen 2, it fell short of Moana 2‘s figures, which earned $13.8 million from its preview. Additionally, the Zootopia sequel’s current estimations are still lagging behind the Moana sequel’s overall gross from its opening weekend, which totalled $225 million.
However, it’s the international buzz that has captured attention for the movie, as the sequel opened to a record $33.7 million on opening day in China, making it the tenth highest opening day for a US release. Moreover, the movie has been received exceptionally well among critics as opposed to Moana 2, which garnered middling reviews upon release.
With the good word of mouth building momentum, the movie is expected to enjoy better legs at the box office than the Moana sequel. And if the early projections for its Chinese box office are of any indication, the movie could very much top the charts when it comes to the highest-grossing US movie of 2025.
