Having worked with Quentin Tarantino in three movies, Uma Thurman had the perfect advice for her daughter Maya Hawke, who joined forces with the auteur for 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Hawke, who played a member of the Manson family, which comprised actors who have gone on to become industry biggies in their own right, playfully quipped that her mom advised her to keep her shoes on (via Good Hang podcast).
Keep your shoes on.
Her comments are obviously a reference to Tarantino’s supposed foot fetish, given the abundance of foot shots spanning throughout his filmography. As for her mother’s experience with Tarantino, things took a near-fatal turn during their final days of filming Kill Bill.

Does Uma Thurman Still Hold a Grudge Against Tarantino Over Kill Bill Crash?
The car crash in Kill Bill: Vol. 2 was shot for real, as Thurman was asked to drive a car, which she believed was in poor condition, on a sandy road, despite her reservations. The near-fatal crash caused the actor to sustain lifelong injuries to her neck and knees as a result (via The New York Times).

This reasonably muddled her relationship with Tarantino for the years to come, and things got further murkier after disgraced r-pist Harvey Weinstein attempted to hide the footage of the crash to avoid a lawsuit from Thurman.
On the flip side, it appears the duo have made amends after Tarantino handed her the confidential footage, allowing the actor to shed light on the traumatic event, and Tarantino himself took accountability for putting her life at risk (via Deadline).
I am guilty, for putting her in that car, but not the way that people are saying I am guilty of it. It’s the biggest regret of my life, getting her to do that stunt. There are certain things I can’t get too far into the weeds on, but I will any questions you have about it.
Thurman later commended Tarantino for being remorseful and doing the right thing by sharing the footage that Weinstein once attempted to bury.
Quentin Tarantino Has an Explanation For his Obsession with Feet
Now coming back to Tarantino’s supposed obsession with feet, which Thurman also experienced when she took the dance floor in Pulp Fiction, the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood director dismissed the rumors of foot fetish.

Instead, he explained the focus on foot shots in his works is nothing more than good direction, as he drew parallels with the works of other major filmmakers, including Sofia Coppola, Luis Buñuel, and Alfred Hitchcock (via GQ).
I don’t take it seriously. There’s a lot of feet in a lot of good directors’ movies. That’s just good direction. Like, before me, the person foot fetishism was defined by was Luis Buñuel, another film director. And Hitchcock was accused of it and Sofia Coppola has been accused of it.
While it’s certainly possible that the whole discourse is overblown and it’s nothing more than a stylistic choice, with even Hawke now weighing in, it’s safe to say Tarantino won’t be exempt from these rumors anytime soon.
