Oscar-nominated star Diane Ladd passed away at the age of 89 on November 3rd, 2025. Laura Dern, her daughter, and Oscar-winning herself, broke the saddening news to Variety. Ladd died by her daughter’s side at their Ojai, Calif, residence. Survived by Dern and her two grandchildren, Ladd’s daughter described Ladd as an amazing mother and an empathetic spirit, adding:
My amazing hero and my profound gift of a mother, Diane Ladd, passed with me beside her this morning, at her home in Ojai, Ca. She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist and empathetic spirit that only dreams could have seemingly created. We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.
The details regarding her cause of death remain under wraps, as of now. Even though the world has lost a gem of an artist today, Ladd’s body of work will continue to inspire millions for generations.
Throwback to Diane Ladd’s Greatest Works
It wasn’t until her early 30s that Ladd finally earned recognition on the big screen, starting with Martin Scorsese’s Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, which nabbed the actor her first Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actress.
She once again dominated the screen in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart, starring opposite her daughter Dern. Her performance once again nabbed Ladd an Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actress for playing Marietta Fortune, a deranged mother who plots revenge after her daughter’s boyfriend rejects her advances.
This was swiftly followed by another mother-daughter collaboration for Martha Coolidge’s Rambling Rose, where she plays an eccentric and well-educated matriarch of a Southern family, Diane Ladd.

Then again, these movies only scratch the surface of Ladd’s impeccable run that spanned several decades, and the realm of showbiz will miss her absence.
Diane Ladd and Laura Dern Hold One Rare Oscar Feat
Among all her works that earned Ladd an Oscar nod, Rambling Rose holds a pretty rare feat that hasn’t been replicated to this day. Not only did Ladd score an Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actress for her performance, but her daughter, Dern, also scored an Oscar nod for Best Actress.

To this date, it remains the only instance of a mother and daughter duo earning Oscar nods on the same night. While none of them managed to secure the Oscar glory, and Ladd’s Oscar cabinet remained empty throughout her career’s prolonged run in the industry, this does nothing to diminish her immaculate career and brilliance in the medium.
On the bright side, her daughter, Dern, would eventually land the gold for her performance in Marriage Story. For a career that commenced seven decades ago, starting with her performances as a child actor, Ladd’s legacy transcends award recognition.
