Global Afrobeats sensation Burna Boy recently appeared on The Jennifer Hudson Show, where he reflected on the evolution of Afrobeats and its deep African roots.

The Grammy-winning artist described the genre’s worldwide success as a “return to the source,” linking its rhythm and influence back to the continent where it all began.

During his conversation on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Burna Boy explained that Afrobeats’ global rise is part of a natural cultural cycle. “I always say everything in life goes in a circle,” he said. “The starting point is where everything eventually returns, and the starting point of everything is Africa, including music.”

The singer went on to describe Afrobeats as a reflection of that journey, music that has traveled around the world and found its way back home. “Afrobeats as it is now,” he continued, “is just a manifestation of things coming back to the starting point.”

Hudson later asked Burna Boy about a long-standing rumor that his family has a historical tie to Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. The singer confirmed that his grandfather, the veteran broadcaster Benson Idonije, was indeed Fela Kuti’s first manager. “Yeah, my grandfather was Fela’s first manager,” he said proudly, acknowledging the family legacy that continues to shape his musical journey.

Burna Boy humorously added that he would have loved to bring his grandfather on the show but noted that the 88-year-old music legend no longer travels often. “I should have brought him, but he’s a bit too old now. He doesn’t really like to fly,” he joked.

The conversation showcased Burna Boy’s deep personal connection to the roots of Afrobeats, a genre that has transcended borders while remaining grounded in African identity. His remarks not only highlighted his pride in his heritage but also reaffirmed the genre’s enduring link to the pioneers who started it all.
