‘The Apothecary Diaries’ Has One Great Character Who Sadly Gets Almost No Screentime

The Apothecary Diaries has plenty of great characters, but a handful of them are simply adorable. These characters make fans want to pinch their cheeks and protect them at all costs. One of the leading members of the ‘too precious, must protect’ squad is undoubtedly Lihaku.

Lihaku debuted in season 1 of the anime and had a great impact on fans. Since then, he has shown how dedicated and likable he is. He is also a loyal soldier, but unfortunately, the series barely pays any heed to him anymore.

Lihaku’s character holds great importance in The Apothecary Diaries

Lihaku is the son of an important official in The Apothecary Diaries and moved to the Imperial Capital. He is the leader of his own small unit and is a military commander. He was first introduced at the garden party in season 1 of the anime as he gave Maomao a hair stick. The latter conveniently used the ornament to trap Lihaku into letting her temporarily visit her hometown.

In exchange, she let him meet Pairin, one of the Three Princesses of the Verdigris house. He fell madly in love with her and decided to buy her once and for all. No matter how impossible a quest it is, he decided to work harder so that he could buy her contract. But other than his love for Pairin, he was also shown to be an extremely loyal member of the court.

He helped Maomao during investigations during season 1. However, his scenes became shorter and shorter till he only appeared twice in the entire second season. Jinshi took an interest in his career and even asked him to be a guard in the Northern Province during the hunt. He even captured the assassin who was after Jinshi. In the latest episode (46), he led the ambush for the assault on the fortress controlled by the Shi clan. Thus, the series has established that Lihaku is also an important as well as useful character in the series.

Lihaku won over everyone with his golden retriever energy. He is good-natured and honest, and everyone likes him. But he is also extremely simple-minded and adorably naive. How else did he get tricked by Maomao so easily? To add on top of everything, he fell in love with Pairin, a highly valued courtesan. He also deludes himself into thinking that he can buy Pairin, even though his whole year’s worth of salary wasn’t enough to meet her.

Nonetheless, he knows how to do his job and is one of the best at it. He works even harder so that he can save up for Pairin. His nerves of steel can rarely ever be fazed. Given the fact that Jinshi took an active interest in him, it is pretty easy to deduce that he is a character who deserves more screentime, which the anime is actively denying him.

Thus, The Apothecary Diaries needs to pay more attention to him. Barely two prominent appearances in an entire 24-episode season 2 are pretty dim for any character. He has been in the series since season 1 and has proved his worth. He might not be an important character in the series, but fans still love him and would love to see more of him in the next season.

The Apothecary Diaries anime is currently available to stream on Crunchyroll.
