Pokémon series and Ash’s adventure have to be among the longest-running adventures in the shonen genre. The series has been continuing for 1232 episodes over 26 years. Over these two decades, our protagonist has come across several Pokémon and even captured a lot of them. Ash constantly switches out Pokémon when he enters a new region, which means fans get to see a fresh set of teams with various combinations of Pokémon.

It’s not like Ash has caught every Pokémon he has encountered. Sometimes he was shown to be quite nonchalant and not bothering to catch those he did not need. He also couldn’t catch some due to several reasons. Sometimes it might be due to his incompetence or sometimes it might be unforeseen circumstances. This means that many powerful Pokémon have never been official members of Ash’s party.

Ash didn’t catch Lugia because of its consequences on the world
Legendary Pokémon Lugia
Ash ran into the legendary Pokémon Lugia quite a few times during his adventure. He even became close with them, but he never caught one. However, it’s not the protagonist’s fault that he didn’t dare to catch it. Capturing a Lugia was an outright dangerous and unethical ordeal.
This was significantly depicted in Pokémon the Movie 2000: The Power of One. The movie specifically reveals that capturing certain legendary Pokémon can have dire consequences for the world’s climate. These consequences were about to kill Ash, so he decided to keep away from officially catching a Lugia in his team. He didn’t want any sort of disaster to befall him, his team, or the world.

Ash has come across several temporary members for his crew, may it be people or Pokémon throughout his adventure. They traveled with him despite not being a part of his official team. One such example is the legendary Pokémon Solgaleo. Ash never caught this Pokémon, even though it traveled with him for a considerable amount of time. Ash found the Pokémon while it was a Cosmog and opted to carry it with him on his adventures.
Cosmog evolves into Solgaleo in the episode Revealing the Stuff of Legend! Ash finally defeats Lusamine with its help. Shortly after, it decides to part ways with Ash. The duo was quite close, and Solgaleo even helped Ash on a lot of his adventures, but at the end of the day, it was never his Pokémon.
