34 years ago, on June 1, 1992, one of the best episodes of Star Trek: TNG aired and took the franchise to the next level in terms of storytelling and critical reception. The episode, ‘The Inner Light,’ is the gold standard when it comes to Star Trek episodes, with Sir Patrick Stewart’s performance being a highlight.

Written by Morgan Gendel, who was a freelance writer for the show, and Peter Allan Fields, the episode won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, making it one of the most prestigious episodes for the franchise.

What Is a Hugo Award? Every Star Trek Episode That Won It

The Hugo Awards are one of the most prestigious honors for science fiction. Along with the Nebula Award, the Hugo Awards are one of the top-most honor for all works in sci-fi, including books, films, magazines, and even games.

The award is named after Hugo Gernsback, the founder of the magazine Amazing Stories, and was first held in 1953, at the World Science Fiction Convention. Star Trek has had a long history with the awards, with The Original Series winning its first award in 1967 for the episode, ‘The Menagerie’.

The franchise won its next Hugo Award for ‘The City on the Edge of Forever’, which is one of the best episodes of the show. After that, ‘The Inner Light’ was the first Star Trek episode to win a Hugo, 25 years after its previous win. TNG won again with ‘All Good Things…’. Here are all the Hugo awards that Star Trek has won over the years.

After Star Trek: TNG got its second Hugo Award, the franchise had another dry spell until 2025’s Lower Decks won Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form).

Why Inner Light Is One of the Best Star Trek Episodes Ever

Sir Patrick Stewart in Star Trek: TNG | Credits: Paramount

The Star Trek franchise works best when it intellectually and philosophically evaluates the meaning of humanity and life through a sci-fi lens. There is a reason why ‘The Inner Light’ broke the dry spell of the franchise at the Hugo Awards (and is Patrick Stewart’s favorite episode).

The setup is pretty simple. The Enterprise comes across a mysterious probe, which emits an energy that renders Jean-Luc Picard unconscious. After that, we are transported, much like Picard, to the planet of Kataan. Picard wakes up as Kamin, a scientist on the planet with a wife and son. He then sees the entire spectrum of life as Kamin on the planet.

The episode highlights not just what the ultimate human question is (companionship and being seen), but also adds a layer of humanity to Picard. The ultimate question for him throughout the show, and in the spinoff series, Picard, is whether he will end up with a companion. The question still seems to remain unanswered.

The episode has garnered many rave reviews, with many publications ranking it on top of the best Star Trek episode lists. We think it deserves to be up there, too, and the storyline is Star Trek at its best.
