There has been an influx of anime remakes lately. While anime like Fruits Basket and Rurouni Kenshin have gotten good treatment with their remakes, there are still many older anime that remain constrained by outdated animations, poor pacing, or severe deviations from the source material.
These anime, if remade with modern animations and pacing, hold the potential of surpassing even the modern titles like Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen. Let’s explore ten anime that need to get a remake of their own in the coming years.
1. Berserk Deserves a Proper Anime More Than Anything Else

Fans are invested in this manga to this date, but the existing anime versions are subpar. The 1997 adaptation covered only a small part of the story and suffered from bad animation because of a small budget. Other adaptations failed as well, with the 2016 adaptation being a total disaster.
Yet, it is well known that Berserk is one of the best stories of all time. A remake of this anime would make it the best dark fantasy anime of all time within weeks. With the Berserk manga’s June 2026 return after a long hiatus, now would be a perfect time for a remake.
2. Clannad Is a Romance Masterpiece That Suffers From a Weak Start

Clannad is one of the best coming-of-age romance anime of all time, but it suffers from a big problem. The tone of the first season of the anime is entirely different from the tone of its sequel. Which wouldn’t have been a problem if it weren’t for the fact that season 2 is often dubbed as the peak of the story. Because of this, many viewers give up the story early on.
Season 1 focuses on high school comedy with fast pacing, while Season 2 dives deep into the struggles of raising a child while grieving yourself. If season 2 is adapted again as a standalone anime, it could potentially reintroduce this masterpiece to the modern audience.
3. Monster Was Way Ahead of Its Time

Monster is a psychological thriller that maintains high popularity today. However, it suffers heavily from outdated animations and sound design. It has muted color palettes and low resolution on almost every streaming service. The adaptation is highly faithful to the manga, but it results in a very slow pace.
A modern remake of this anime can fix both problems at once. Studio Madhouse has improved significantly, and while Monster is not an action-heavy story, it would still be amazing to see more fluid animations.
4. Tokyo Ghoul Can Be Saved With a Remake

The Tokyo Ghoul anime was extremely rushed, and it completely failed to capture the essence of the manga. Studio Pierrot attempted to compress 143 manga chapters into a few 12-episode seasons, which resulted in terrible pacing and a ruined story.
The core themes of the manga were replaced with badly animated action scenes. A complete remake can fix this. It is worth mentioning that just like Berserk, Tokyo Ghoul has one of the best dark fantasy stories of all time, and it deserves a proper adaptation.
5. Yu Yu Hakusho Is Almost Forgotten

Yu Yu Hakusho is a foundational shonen anime, but it is almost forgotten because of being so old. While this anime doesn’t suffer from any flaws, a remake would reintroduce this classic story to modern fans and set the standard of good storytelling and character arcs once more.
Furthermore, this anime was action-heavy at times, and with modern animation techniques, this story could come out as one of the best action anime as well.
6. Inuyasha Is One of the OG Isekai Stories

Inuyasha is one of the original isekai stories, and was quite popular in the 2000s. The anime ran for 167 episodes, but it had a rushed ending that is still talked about. A massive portion of the initial run consists of episodic filler, recycled animation, and a highly repetitive plot.
A remake could fix all these problems. Furthermore, despite its flaws, it also remains one of the best romance anime of all time, creating tropes that are still used as a template to this day.
7. Fate/Stay Night Could’ve Been Better Than the Entire Fate Franchise

The Fate franchise is insanely popular for its action and animations, but it’s hell to get into. While there exists an anime that is the perfect entry point into the series, it is hard to recommend because it is badly animated.
The original Fate/Stay Night visual novel contained 3 routes: Fate/Stay Night, Unlimited Bladeworks, and Heaven’s Feel. However, the primary route, which is the perfect entry point, suffers from horrendous animations even for the time it was released. A remake of this route is one of the biggest wishes of the Fate fans themselves.
8. There Is No Racing Anime Bigger Than Initial D

The early stages of the anime used late-1990s computer graphics for the cars. This created a jarring, ugly aesthetic when placed next to the 2D character animation. The 3D car models lack proper textures, environmental lighting, and realistic physics rendering.
However, all of that was fixed with the adaptation of the sequel: MF Ghost. A remake by the same studio can introduce the legend of Takumi to modern fans, reviving the hype of JDM cars once more.
9. Great Teacher Onizuka Is Still Relevant

Great Teacher Onizuka was all about the issues in education, including bullying, negligent parents, and corruption. All of those themes hold up to this date, but the 1999 anime adaptation is visually unappealing and feels outdated.
There have been multiple live-action adaptations since the anime was finished, keeping the fanbase alive. If this anime gets readapted once more, it would easily become one of the best modern high school anime as well.
10. Just Like the Game, the Steins;Gate Anime Deserves a Remake

Even after so many years, there hasn’t been a single time-travel anime that came close to Steins;Gate. The anime was also a love letter to the anime culture in Akihabara in the early 2000s, an era that feels like it will never come back.
The 2011 anime adaptation is amazing, but it looks outdated. Furthermore, the visual novel, which was the original source material for this anime, recently received a remake with updated, fully animated visuals. The remake also contained many new storylines that can be adapted into the anime as well.

The anime industry is filled with many stories that failed to reach their potential due to bad studio decisions, technical limitations, or simply heavy censorship. The ten titles talked about above are the primary anime that should receive a remake among them. However, there are many more anime that deserve a remake to fix past mistakes.
Soul Eater requires a remake to follow the manga’s actual ending. The Promised Neverland also needs a remake to erase its disastrous second season and adapt the manga properly. Akame ga Kill suffered from massive anime-original deviations that ruined its final act.
Why do older anime frequently contain filler episodes or anime-original endings?
Historically, anime adaptations were broadcast concurrently with the publication of their source manga. When the anime’s story caught up to the available manga chapters, studios made original storylines (filler) or entirely new conclusions to maintain their weekly broadcast schedules.
Are there currently any official plans for a Tokyo Ghoul anime remake?
No. Despite massive fan demand leading up to the anime’s 10th anniversary, Studio Pierrot has not announced a new adaptation.
Has a new Berserk anime adaptation been confirmed?
No official anime adaptation is currently in production.
Which remake do you want to see the most? Let us know in the comments.
