The early part of Stranger Things Season 2 has Eleven doing the one thing no one wants a teenager with superpowers to do. She runs off to find answers on her own. The episode may not be the most beloved plot detour, but Bon Jovi’s Runaway gives it some personality.
It’s a fitting pick for her bold decision to step into the world without anyone guiding her. The moment is messy and very Eleven. The song makes it feel like she’s powering through to find herself. This song perfectly goes with the early stage where she’s still figuring out who she wants to be outside Hopper’s cabin.

Season 2’s Snow Ball is one of those scenes that Stranger Things fans replay for a quick emotional recharge. It is simple and sweet. Mike thinks Eleven won’t make it to the dance. He sulks. He glares at the floor. And then she walks in, and everything in his brain stops working for a second.
The Police’s Every Breath You Take floats through the scene as if the world shrinks down to the two kids trying not to step on each other’s shoes. Season 2 quickly brings in trouble in the form of Billy. The guy doesn’t just walk into Hawkins. He storms in. He pulls up to the school blasting Rock You Like a Hurricane. And suddenly, half the girls are hypnotized by him (and the song). While half the guys get irritated.
The song fits him too well. Loud, messy, and a little dangerous. It also sets the tone for Max’s entrance into the story. She becomes part of the group. But her stepbrother becomes the new headache lurking around. This particular character intro did not need any explanation. One song was enough to send the message loud and clear.
7. Should I Stay or Should I Go – The Clash

Stranger Things Season 1 made this Clash song feel like a secret bond between Will and Jonathan. The brothers grew up feeling a bit sidelined by the town. Music became their way of tuning everything else out. The song, Should I Stay or Should I Go, pops up a few times in the show. But the most touching moment is when Jonathan plays it for a scared Will. He does it to drown out the noise of everything falling apart around them.

Mall culture, neon colors, and the first time Eleven gets to be a regular teen without hiding from monsters or government agents.
Meanwhile, the boys trail behind the girls. The boys try their hand at figuring out the world of gift shopping. And they end up doing a terrible job at it. But the song here is very important to Eleven’s plotline. The song takes us to see the shift in Eleven. At that point, she stops being sheltered. We see her start exploring who she wants to be.
5. Twist of Fate – Olivia Newton-John

Dustin’s Snow Ball moment is one of the sweetest scenes on the show. Steve gives him a quick pep talk in the car. He fixes that glorious hair and sends him in. No, Dustin was not going to launch a tiny NASA mission. He was going to a school ball. Twist of Fate starts to play, and suddenly, Dustin walks with a brand-new confidence. The music adds that soft, dreamy ’80s shimmer. It makes even a school hallway feel dramatic.
And sure, the night doesn’t go exactly how he imagined. But he still shines through in that awkward, adorable way only he can. This song makes the moment memorable because it feels very real.
4. You Don’t Mess Around With Jim – Jim Croce

Hopper’s theme song had to match his personality. Rugged charm. Slight chaos. A little swagger. Jim Croce’s You Don’t Mess Around With Jim first comes in when Hopper and Eleven clean up the cabin and try to create their own strange version of a home.
It shows up again in Season 3, and the timing is too perfect. Hopper manages to scare Mike out of the cabin during a fight over closed doors. He acts as if he just won a championship. Eleven is not amused. But the audience gets the humor instantly. It’s a tiny break from the tension of everything else happening.
3. Running Up That Hill – Kate Bush

Max’s connection to Running Up That Hill feels so personal that the song almost becomes another character in her story. She keeps it on repeat because it matches the heaviness she walks around with. And when Vecna drags her into his nightmare world, that same song becomes her way out.
The moment she fights her way back is very emotional. It’s raw and desperate. And it is somehow hopeful at the same time. The track switches from comfort to lifeline in seconds. It stops being background music and turns into her anchor. And the way the world outside the show suddenly fell in love with it again just proves how deeply that scene hit everyone.
2. Heroes – Peter Gabriel
