X-Men MCU Movie’s Latest Update Isn’t Bad News Like Some Fans Think

While the latest update on the MCU X-Men movie is alarming to some fans, the news isn’t actually all that bad.

Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier has been tapped to direct a new X-Men movie that is part of the MCU. The film does not yet have a release date; however, it isn’t expected to arrive until Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The former of those two titles is being released this December, while the latter doesn’t come out until 2027.

Why aren’t the X-Men MCU movie rewrites a bad thing?

In May 2024, it was reported that Michael Lesslie had been tapped to write the script for Marvel Studios’ next X-Men movie. Schreier wasn’t officially confirmed to be directing the project until July 2025; meaning, Lesslie was working on it before Marvel had any idea who was going to helm the picture.

Then, just recently, it was announced that Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo are now working on a new draft of the film’s script. Some are taking this as a bad omen and think there might be pre-production problems happening behind-the-scenes.

This, however, is nothing to worry about, as it’s a common practice in big-budget filmmaking. The same thing happened with Thunderbolts*, for example: Eric Pearson wrote the original screenplay for the movie before Schreier was attached. Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo were then both brought on to do rewrites, and the result fans were left with is one of the best-reviewed MCU movies to date.

Which is to say, Schreier, Calo, and Lee have a successful track record of working together — the trio also collaborated together on Netflix’s Beef show, while Calo is the co-showrunner of FX’s The Bear. There are plenty of elements in Thunderbolts*, too, that suggest these three could make a great X-Men movie, whether it be the team camaraderie element, the ability to flesh out sad and oftentimes sidelined characters, etc.

The MCU X-Men movie does not yet have a release date. Thunderbolts* is available to stream on Disney+.
