Toy Story 5 has broken the franchise’s own box office record on its opening weekend. The animated sequel pulled in $160 million domestically, topping all other films released this year.

Toy Story 5 delivers a record franchise opening at box office

The fifth installment in Pixar’s beloved series beat Universal’s Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which opened to $131.7 million, to claim the biggest domestic debut of 2026. With an additional $152 million from international markets, Toy Story 5 posted a massive global opening of $312 million (via Box Office Mojo). It’s also the second-best worldwide debut ever for a Pixar film (excluding China), trailing only Inside Out 2’s $384 million.

The film now holds the biggest opening weekend in Toy Story franchise history, surpassing Toy Story 4’s $120 million debut in 2019. It also ranks as the second-largest animated opening weekend of all time in North America, sitting just behind Pixar’s own Incredibles 2, which opened to $182.7 million in 2018. In terms of June openings specifically, it ranks third, behind Jurassic World and Incredibles 2.

According to EntTelligence, 11.5 million people watched Toy Story 5 across opening weekend, at average ticket prices of $15.25 for general admission. The film drew heavy matinee crowds, with 64% of Saturday’s audience watching before 5 p.m. Los Angeles led top markets with 10% of total admissions, followed by New York, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, and Chicago (via Deadline).

Directed by Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton, the film follows Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), and Jessie (Joan Cusack) as their owner Bonnie becomes fixated on a kiddie smart tablet called Lilypad. Taylor Swift also contributed an original song, “I Knew It, I Knew You,” to the soundtrack.

The broader Toy Story franchise has now grossed more than $3 billion worldwide across its first four films, two of which crossed $1 billion globally.

If recent animated sequels offer any guide, Toy Story 5 has a strong box office trajectory ahead. Inside Out 2 and Zootopia 2 finished their runs with $1.6 billion and $1.8 billion, respectively. A similar run would make Toy Story 5 the highest-grossing entry in the franchise, overtaking Toy Story 4’s $1.07 billion lifetime total (via Variety).
