Tom Cruise’s ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ Has Failed to Convince Fans Franchise’s Most Controversial Decision Was Justified

For over two decades, Mission: Impossible has remained one of the most consistent action franchises in cinema, driven by Tom Cruise’s relentless commitment to spectacle and storytelling. From death-defying stunts to intricately plotted espionage thrillers, the franchise has captivated audiences worldwide with each new installment.

Yet as the series nears its conclusion with Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, fan enthusiasm has become entangled with disappointment, thanks to one controversial creative decision made in Dead Reckoning, the death of Rebecca Ferguson’s beloved character, Ilsa Faust.

Ilsa’s death still feels hollow

Introduced in Rogue Nation, Ilsa quickly cemented herself as more than just a supporting character. A skilled agent, complex foil to Ethan Hunt, and compelling presence in her own right, she became a fan favorite almost immediately. So, when Dead Reckoning made the shocking move of killing off Ilsa, only halfway through the story, fans were left stunned.

As The Final Reckoning aims to wrap up decades of storytelling, many viewers feel that the loss of Ilsa remains unresolved, unjustified, and an emotional misstep for the franchise. While some might argue that Rebecca Ferguson’s limited availability justified Ilsa’s exit, fans have repeatedly made it clear they feel the character deserved a more meaningful send-off.

Fans argue that Ilsa’s death wasn’t just poorly handled, it undermined the emotional stakes the franchise had built across multiple films. There’s widespread agreement that her combat death felt out of character, especially for someone previously shown to hold her own against elite assassins. Even viewers who understood Ferguson had other professional obligations felt the execution lacked weight.

In the Final Reckoning threads, a portion of fans still hold out hope that Ilsa somehow survived. Theories range from her faking her death to a surprise reappearance at the end. Whether those hopes are realized or not, it reflects the depth of emotional investment audiences had in her character and how her sudden exit left a gaping hole in the franchise’s emotional arc.

One fan came up with an interesting theory on Reddit. The fan posted a snapshot from the new movie where Tom Cruise’s character is seen walking with someone. Based on the way the scene was shot and how the female character matched Hunt’s steps, the fan believes that it was Ilsa. Unfortunately, there’s no credible evidence to back that claim.

The franchise finale shouldn’t leave fans disillusioned

As The Final Reckoning tries to deliver a supposedly conclusive end to the Mission: Impossible saga, one would expect the fanbase to be excited, nostalgic, and emotionally satisfied. Instead, the conversation is dominated by bitterness over Ilsa’s treatment.

Many fans feel the series prioritized introducing a new female lead, Grace (played by Hayley Atwell), over properly closing out an existing one. That tradeoff hasn’t gone unnoticed. This isn’t just about nostalgia or character loyalty, it’s about storytelling. A satisfying conclusion to any long-running franchise demands that character arcs are resolved with care, especially ones that carried so much emotional and thematic weight.

But the truth is, it’s nearly impossible to satisfy every section of the fanbase. Looking at the spectacle that Final Reckoning is, it’s easy to conclude that the makers have left no stone unturned to produce the best movie-watching experience.

The action set pieces have been the heart and soul of MI movies. Since they largely rely on Tom Cruise to bring it home, no one has any doubt that the superstar actor has done his job. As for the storyline of the MI movies, some believe there are loose threads.

The ideal scenario would’ve been that every fan of the franchise was happy with the conclusion. But since it’s impossible in the modern world, the makers still deserve an A+ for a brilliant job.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is currently in cinemas.
