Nearly 20 years since it ended, Malcolm in the Middle is coming back with a reboot series. I have to admit, I’ve been both excited and sceptical about the upcoming reboot. Titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, the series is set to premiere on April 10, 2026, on Hulu and Disney+ (via Hulu Press).
Frankie Muniz will return as a grown-up Malcolm, navigating life with his girlfriend, Tristan (Kiana Madeira), and his daughter, Leah (Keeley Karsten). Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek, and other key cast members are set to come back. Some new characters will also help expand the Wilkerson world. Original creator Linwood Boomer has also returned as the writer and executive producer.
But as much as I want to relive the chaos, I hope the reboot of the Fox show doesn’t just rehash old jokes. There’s so much the original did right, but also a lot it could have done better. Here’s what I personally want to see the reboot get right.
1. Make Malcolm’s Genius Actually Work for Him

One of the original series’ funniest contradictions was that Malcolm’s genius rarely helped him. His brilliance brought problems and ridicule. And of course, he was sabotaged by his own family. Even at the series finale, when he finally had a chance at success, Lois and Hal’s choice nearly derailed him. Malcolm finally has a chance at a high-paying job, but Lois and Hal force him to work as a janitor while attending Harvard, as the family is short on funds, while Lois planned for him to become the President of the United States.
Intelligence is not the same as wisdom, but everything should have worked out in the end. In the reboot, I want Malcolm to finally put his intelligence to good use without losing the humor. Maybe he’s trying to run a business, solve problems for his family, or mentor his daughter in creative ways. Watching him actually benefit from his smartness would feel satisfying after two decades of a cursed ending.
2. Malcolm in the Middle Reboot Shouldn’t Repeat Misogynistic Humor

I strongly have to agree that some jokes in the original make me cringe today. From body shaming, wardrobe malfunction, to locker-room gags, the humor sometimes leaned on outdated stereotypes. I hope the reboot keeps the classic irreverent tone but avoids sexist or demeaning jokes. In the series, female characters are often introduced to spark a crush or a dare, but we have to understand that they are not tools to satisfy male desires.
We can laugh at Hal’s (Bryan Cranston) ridiculous hobbies, Francis’s (Christopher Masterson) disasters, or Reese’s (Justin Berfield) schemes without relying on clichés that haven’t aged well. Humor should come from situations, not reinforcing old stereotypes.
3. Show Working-Class Struggles Without Excessive Misery

One of my favorite things about the original show was its portrayal of a working-class family. There were unpaid bills, busted appliances, thrift finds, and DIY repairs. There were strict rules on food and utilities, which continued during the whole run of the show. Sometimes the Wilkersons’ problems felt relentless, to the point that they overshadowed the comedy.
In the reboot, I want to see their economic struggles represented authentically. It could be balanced with clever tricks, wins, or maybe some absurd but endearing successes.
4. Keep the Parenting Tactic Firm but Fair

It is admirable that Lois (Jane Kaczmarek), as a mother, always demanded respect and boundaries. She wasn’t mean for the sake of it; she enforced rules because she had to keep the family from falling apart. I hope the reboot preserves her balance of toughness and care. Grounding the kids, assigning chores, or calling out bad behavior should still feel real.
Now that she is a grandma, I also want to see her show warmth and patience as a mother of adults and grandkids. The four-episode show will center around their 40th wedding anniversary. Hal and Lois demanded Malcolm’s presence. He has been hiding from his family. I hope it turns out well for him.
5. Malcolm in the Middle Reboot Shouldn’t Be Nostalgia Bait
Here’s my biggest personal plea. The reboot doesn’t need every single reference from the original. No one cares if the secret toilet, Cynthia, or Kid Charlemagne makes an appearance in the four-episode format. The new series should focus on fresh, funny stories about Malcolm as a father, a partner, and a sibling.
Instead, they can use Easter eggs, but I don’t want the entire reboot to feel like a highlight reel. I fear that reboot will turn out like those failed comedy movies, Dumb and Dumber To, The Hangover sequels, and Happy Gilmore 2. The Malcolm in the Middle reboot has a real chance to honor the legacy while giving Malcolm’s story the evolution it deserves.
Personally, I’m rooting for the reboot to hit all of these points. I still want to laugh at this chaotic family while feeling like the characters have actually grown up.
