Fans of the dystopian drama The Testaments have been waiting for an update on the show’s future for quite some time now. The Hulu series premiered one year after the series finale of its flagship show, The Handmaid’s Tale, and continues the story, focusing on teens Agnes and Daisy as they undergo training to be future wives in Gilead.

The good news for fans of The Testaments is that Hulu has renewed the series for a second season. With one week left until its season 1 finale, which airs on May 27, 2026, Hulu has reportedly renewed the series for season 2. With the first season bringing in over 45 million streaming hours globally, the renewal was a given (via THR).
The show is set after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale and follows Agnes, a teen who is sent to Gilead for training, and her friendship with Daisy. While Ann Dowd was one of the few links to the original show (apart from the world, of course), Elizabeth Moss returned as June Osborne in episode 3, making a surprise cameo.
The Testaments has an 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics terming it a worthy sequel to the original show. Critics appreciated the coming-of-age genre shift from the original and also praised the visuals, terming it brighter than the original, reflecting the perspective of the teens of Gilead. We also gave it a fairly positive review.
Showrunner Bruce Miller and executive producer Warren Littlefield have made some changes to the novel by Atwood, most importantly, the setting. The original novel takes place 15 years after June’s story, while The Testaments takes place only four years later, complicating the ending of The Handmaid’s Tale.
Showrunner Bruce Miller Has Planned The Testaments For The Long Haul
Like any other streaming show, The Testaments was unsure about its fate, despite being a sequel to an established IP. The original show ran for 6 seasons and ended in 2025. While the future was still uncertain, showrunner Bruce Miller said he had planned for multiple seasons from the beginning.
Talking about the season 2 renewal and the future of the show, Miller told The Hollywood Reporter,
It can’t be like an old TV show that just ends. That would be so unsatisfying. So I think just out of trying to end it in a satisfying way in the business environment that we exist in, I think of about 30 to 50 episodes. So three to five seasons.
The showrunner mentioned they had an idea of where to end the series and ensured there was enough material to span multiple seasons. Now that the show has received a season 2 renewal, Miller and team might start planning for the long haul.
