Christopher Nolan handed CinemaCon attendees a small but telling piece of his Odyssey puzzle, and it quietly rewrote what audiences thought they knew about Charlize Theron’s place in the epic.
The footage put one persistent rumour to bed and replaced it with a divine twist, revealing that the Oscar winner is bewitching Matt Damon’s Odysseus from a very different corner of Greek mythology than previously reported.
Charlize Theron’s role in The Odyssey revealed
Charlize Theron has confirmed she is playing Calypso in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. The reveal came during Universal’s CinemaCon presentation, where Nolan debuted footage featuring Theron’s character opposite Matt Damon’s Odysseus (via The Hollywood Reporter).
The footage opened with Damon’s Odysseus questioning Calypso about his lost memories. “How long have I been here, Calypso? I don’t remember anything before Troy. Did I have a wife, children, a son? If I had a son, how old would he be now?” Damon’s character asks in the clip. The scene intercuts with images of a younger Odysseus alongside his son, played by Tom Holland, and his wife, played by Anne Hathaway.
The Calypso confirmation updates earlier reporting that placed Theron in the role of Circe, the goddess of sorcery. Theron herself referenced the Circe role during a June 2025 Variety red carpet interview before joining the production. “I am just gonna talk to Chris [Nolan] about it, and we will see where it goes. It’s super intimidating. I am the last one to show up [on the set],” Theron said at the time.
Theron also addressed her late arrival on set during a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I feel like I’m going to be the new kid on the block. I know it’s epic from reading the script, but for myself, I’m only there for two weeks, I think,” Theron shared.
Nolan captured the entire production on IMAX cameras and described the shoot as demanding. The filmmaker called the project “an absolute nightmare to film” during his CinemaCon appearance.
The Odyssey arrives in theaters on July 17, 2026, following Nolan’s Best Picture winner Oppenheimer.
