The Legend of Zelda movie release date moved up by a week
Nintendo has officially moved up the worldwide release date for its highly anticipated live-action The Legend of Zelda film.
Specifically, the company’s legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto announced the schedule change on X on Wednesday. As a result, the Sony Pictures title will now arrive in theaters on April 30, 2027, one week earlier than the previously announced May 7 date.
“This is Miyamoto. I would like to let you know that the worldwide theatrical release date for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda has been moved up to April 30, 2027, from May 7,” he wrote. “The team is working hard to deliver the film to everyone as soon as possible. There’s less than a year to go until release, so thank you for waiting.”
The release date was originally set for March 26, 2027. Nintendo then pushed it back to May 7 due to production reasons. The latest adjustment now brings the theatrical premiere forward by a full week.
Wes Ball directs the film, which stars Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. Sony and Nintendo revealed the lead casting back in July 2025. Production then began in November 2025 in what the studio described as a lush, natural setting. Nintendo also shared first-look images of both actors in character at that time.
Miyamoto and fellow designer Takashi Tezuka originally created the video game franchise back in 1986. The story centers on elf-like warrior Link and Princess Zelda as they battle the villainous Ganon. The former warlord-turned-demon-king seeks to conquer the magical land of Hyrule. Nintendo first announced plans for the live-action adaptation in 2023. The film represents the franchise’s first major theatrical release for a global audience.
