The Boys has ended after a highly anticipated finale that featured Homelander going against the Boys. Straight out of the comics, we got some key moments that were rewritten to fit the show, particularly Butcher’s endgame. The show did a lukewarm job with The Boys Season 5 finale, quickly tying up a lot of threads that it had set up over the course of the season.
The main question was answered: Would it be Homelander or the Boys? The Boys won in the end, but the ending certainly didn’t feel conclusive. The Boys always felt like a show about Butcher and Homelander, with the other characters serving these two’s needs. Thankfully, we got a somewhat satisfying conclusion as both of them die, but at the same time, there are a lot of loose ends.
From Annie and Hughie’s new career as private superheroes, to Gen V being put aside without a conclusive finish, we’re left wondering:
Are The Boys Season 5 Loose Ends Intentional?
Starting off with Annie and Hughie’s ending, the pair open up a store that acts as a front for their private venture. With a police radio revealing the nearest area that needs help, Annie immediately goes to help the way Spider-Man does after listening to the police all day. Before this, a call from the newly appointed President of the United States highlights that the government needs Hughie and the Boys to stop the supes running amok.
The fallout of Homelander’s reign over the States has unleashed supes that were either detained, imprisoned, or in hiding. Hughie declines to help the President, stating he’s doing his own thing with Annie, but the President tells him the offer still stands. The impression this leaves is that a potential future show could be set up where Starlight and Hughie will have to pick off the bad supes.
Since they can’t do everything by themselves, another loose end left inconclusive could tie in: Gen V. The supes from Gen V never got their proper sendoff, and even The Boys finale ended with Annie telling them that they need to continue helping people. Could we see a future where they team up to fight street-level supes in the new era of Vought?
Speaking of Vought, Stan Edgar is back in control, and this remains the biggest loose end of them all. There is a high chance of history repeating itself now that Edgar knows of Compound V1 and has Soldier Boy in cryosleep a few floors down in Vought Tower. This loose end is particularly concerning since Vought isn’t brought down, opening up the possibility for another Homelander to emerge.
Meanwhile, the future of The Boys universe will see the storytelling go back in time for Vought Rising. The show is poised to be a prequel, exploring the early days of Soldier Boy and a team of supes while Vought establishes itself in America.
How Vought Rising Will Affect The Boys’ Future

It certainly feels like showrunner Eric Kripke wants to establish a large universe with different characters and myths. Vought Rising will explore the past, meaning we will see Godolkin, Soldier Boy, Bombsight, and so on. Given that Dr. Frederick Vought is directly tied to Vought’s establishment, we will see an amalgamation of characters from The Boys, Gen V, and possibly new characters spoken of but unseen.
Vought Rising has positioned itself as a twisted murder mystery set in the 1950s, and its success will largely determine if Eric Kripke can continue his plan. So far, with Gen V being canceled and Season 5’s fan reviews, The Boys universe is in a tough spot with all its bets hinged on Vought Rising.
Season 5 of The Boys spent a considerable amount of time on Soldier Boy’s character, including his past. Bringing in certain characters that are part of the main roster in Vought Rising, the final season spent a majority of its time plotting the story around these V1 supes from the past.
Time will tell if the show will be a success as it aims for a premiere on Amazon Prime Video in 2027. Given the fanfare for Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy and the stories we’ve heard of his exploits, there is certainly a lot of buzz and excitement for this show.
