The Blood of Dawnwalker puts players in the boots of Coen, a man cursed to live as a human by day and a vampire by night, and that split identity carries all the way to how fights actually play out in-game. The combat in this one runs on a four-directional block-and-parry system, a resource called Activation Charges that fuels Hex magic and execution moves, and a completely different toolkit once the sun goes down.
There’s also four adjustable difficulty presets and a set of deeper combat sliders, with a lot more going on under the hood than a typical hack-and-slash. Wondering how to make sure you don’t get stuck at one place? These are the 10 combat tips and tricks that will help you get through all the duels you’ll face.
10. Get Used to Enemy Patterns

The directional prompt that shows you which way to block is a helpful tool early on, but it disappears entirely on the game’s higher difficulty settings. The director describes the intent behind this, explaining that on those settings players are meant to focus on actually reading their opponent rather than the UI.
In his words, via Game Informer, without the on-screen prompt, you’re left “observing your opponents and reacting to what’s happening on screen.” Even if you’re playing with the indicator turned on, it’s worth watching the enemy’s closing animation itself before going in for the punish. Building that habit early makes tougher fights easy down the line.
9. Use Vampire Mobility to Control the Fight

At night, abilities like Shadowstep and wall-walking aren’t just beneficial for getting around. Instead, they can be used as genuine combat tools, helping you close distance instantly with Shadowstep, letting you punish an enemy who thinks they’re at a safe range. They can also be used to reposition off a wall, pulling you out of a dangerous flank, or set up a surprise angle on a target.
Mobility in particular comes in handy against groups, helping you pick off stragglers and breaking line of sight before diving right back in.
8. Split Your Difficulty and Combat Sliders Instead of Picking One Preset

As mentioned before, The Blood of Dawnwalker features four main difficulty presets: Story, Fair, Challenging, and Duelist. But the game also separates out RPG-focused settings from Action-focused settings, which means you don’t have to accept a preset as it is. If you want a genuine test of your reads in combat, you can change the action difficulty while keeping RPG values closer to Fair.
The best part is that you can retune these sliders at any point in the game, so there’s no reason to grind through a fight that just feels unfair.
7. Feed With a Set Plan

At night, your vampiric abilities are powered by feeding on enemies, which also tops up Coen’s health. However, feeding also leaves Coen exposed for a brief while, granting no protection from nearby enemies who are free to attack while you’re locked into the animation. To nail the right timing, look for a moment when you are done with a major part of a group, or pick off an isolated target, rather than feeding in the middle of a crowd and hoping for the best.
6. Don’t Neglect Your Day And Night Kits

It’s easy to think of Coen’s daytime and nighttime kits as two completely separate combat styles, but they overlap more than they seem. As a vampire, Coen can still draw his sword alongside his claws, and combat at night stays just as directional as it is during the day.
However, Hexes are sealed off once his rune scars heal at night, so don’t expect to lean on blood magic after dark. Treat the sword as your constant and make use of whichever ability is the best fitting at the moment.
5. Use Execution Moves to Close Out Fights Faster

Once you’ve built enough charges, execution moves like the Artery Attack let you end a weakened opponent immediately instead of trading a few more rounds of blows. These moves are a great way to protect your health and stamina in longer engagements, since they cut a fight short the moment an enemy is low enough to finish.
It’s also wise to save a charge specifically for this whenever you’re up against a group, since ending one target quickly can help swing the numbers back in your favor.
4. Set Up Your Hexes Before Swinging Your Sword

During the day, Coen can channel Hex magic, which includes blood-fueled spells like Burning Blood, which cooks an enemy from the inside over time. Unfortunately, Hexes don’t activate instantly, and some require a short setup before you can activate the actual effect, drawing on Coen’s own health and Activation Charges.
Keeping this in mind, rather than trying to weave a Hex into the middle of an active exchange, try to get your setup out of the way right before an engagement so that the payoff lands exactly when you need it.
3. Build Activation Charges Deliberately

Successful attacks, blocks, and parries all generate Activation Charges, which let you unleash Hexes, vampire powers, or execution moves. During a fight, it’s tempting to use a charge as soon as it’s available, but the smarter approach is to think in terms of different phases of the fight. Charge up early against weaker enemies, then hold at least one in reserve for any burst of pressure from an elite or a boss’s late-fight escalation.
2. Treat Your Stamina as a Resource

Mechanics like attacking, blocking, and even parrying utilise Coen’s stamina bar. Moreover, swinging or defending with an empty bar leaves you slow to react and exposed to a follow-up hit, so it’s worth carefully placing your strikes instead of stringing together a full combo every time an opening appears.
This becomes especially important against tougher enemies and bosses, where a stamina-charged dodge or block can be the difference between a weak hit and getting staggered mid-fight.
1. Prioritize Learning the Directional Combat

Every fight in The Blood of Dawnwalker is built around reading where an attack is coming from and responding with a matching directional input, whether that’s up, down, left, or right. On the default settings, an on-screen indicator lets you know about the direction of an incoming strike, and matching it lets you block or parry cleanly instead of eating chip damage.
New players are better off spending their first few encounters purely on recognizing these directional cues rather than just chasing damage. Keep in mind that the entire resource economy of the game, including the Activation Charges, is built on landing clean defensive reads.
The Blood of Dawnwalker officially releases tomorrow, i.e., September 3, 2026 (we have the release countdown going right here), and for anyone jumping in, these are the 10 tips you should keep in mind. Got anything else players should keep in mind? Let us know about it in the comments below!
