Supergirl remains one of the biggest releases of the year. Ahead of its release, a new “scandal” has popped up, and is one that’s not only ridiculous but shouldn’t impact the movie at all.
Supergirl is set to release in theaters on June 26, 2026, and will be based on Tom King’s 2021-2022 comic book series, which Bilquis Evely illustrated. The film stars Milly Alcock, who will play the titular role of Kara Zor-El and will be written by Ana Nogueira and produced by DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Following the film’s latest trailer and marketing, fans online spoke up about a very odd controversy. To many, Alcock’s Kara Zor-El sporting earrings is a slap in the face to Supergirl’s lore, which suggests that her skin is impenetrable. However, this is just yet another example of a very odd, online scandal that’s ridiculous.
Supergirl’s new scandal shouldn’t be a scandal whatsoever
For starters, it’s important to remember that Supergirl is completely fictionalized, and that liberties can be taken to show her off in a different style. Fans online were quick to devolve into debate about the issue, and make it an issue of whether or not James Gunn and the larger DC Universe of films was worth exploring. The director was quick to explain, though, the in-universe reasons for this.
In a post on Threads, Gunn noted that Supergirl can get her ears pierced the same way she was able to get drunk (as she showed up in Superman). “As explained in Superman, the same way she gets drunk – she goes to a planet with a red sun. Not to mention she was raised on a chunk of Krypton so didn’t even experience super powers until her teens,” said Gunn.
This explanation is a legitimate, comic-oriented one, and puts any debate to bed. However, the fact that there ever was any talk about it at all to begin with is ridiculous. For those unaware, DC Comics has taken large liberties with characters’ powers in the past. As many have pointed out, Superman has shaved, cut his own skin, and done a ton of other stuff that would otherwise seem “impossible” if you were to nitpick it to such a degree.
At the end of the day, this “scandal” was largely nothing more than people looking to complain about something regarding the upcoming movie. Thankfully, it should have no real bearing on the film’s success or excitement.
