The new Supergirl trailer suggests that Jason Momoa’s Lobo role may polarize DC fans.

DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures’ Supergirl will be released in United States theaters and IMAX this summer. Directed by Craig Gillespie, the movie will see Milly Alcock reprise her DCU role as Kara Zor-El after she briefly appeared at the end of 2025’s Superman, which was directed by James Gunn. Momoa also stars as Lobo.

What does the Supergirl trailer reveal that might polarize DC fans?

Lobo is not in the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, which the new DCU movie is based on. It’s known that the character would be appearing in Gillespie’s film, though details regarding his role have largely remained under wraps until now.

The recently released trailer for Supergirl sheds some more light on what Lobo will be up to, as the footage seems to reveal that Momoa’s character will be teaming up with Kara. The end of the trailer sees them bantering together and fighting common enemies alongside one another.

In DC Comics, Lobo is an antihero; however, he’s often portrayed as being more villainous in nature than he is heroic. Lobo comes from a planet that has been completely wiped out; however, unlike Superman, Lobo, himself, is largely responsible for the decimation of his own people (comics lore has played around with this idea in the past, but the sentiment largely remains the same). He’s an alien bounty hunter who loves violence and frequently finds himself hunting down popular DC characters.

While, again, Lobo is not in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, many assumed that he would be working against Kara rather than helping her in the DCU movie. Of course, the movie can still play into the character’s flaws, and this doesn’t mean he’s necessarily going to be portrayed as a hero; however, with this being many general audience members’ first introduction to the character, having him act as a force of good rather than one of chaos or evil may be polarizing to comics fans.

Supergirl arrives on June 26, 2026.
