Supergirl is out now in theaters and does not seem to be performing well. As the film’s box office looks poorly, it’s worth thinking about how this might affect a Supergirl 2, which shouldn’t be a thing on DC’s mind as of now.
Supergirl is out in theaters now. Based on Tom King’s 2021–2022 comic book series illustrated by Bilquis Evely, the film stars Milly Alcock in the titular role of Kara Zor-El. It is written by Ana Nogueira and produced by DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.
“When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice,” reads the film’s official synopsis.
Supergirl 2 should be put on pause until the DCU grows a bit
Following Supergirl’s premiere, the film’s box office numbers are not looking good at all. Whether it be because of Supergirl being a lesser-known hero, social media trolls angry about Milly Alcock and the movie being largely about women, or the film itself, the movie has opened to just $67 million globally, and is looking to lose $100 million for Warner Bros. Pictures.
Despite this, WB and DC Studios seem to remain steadfast in their optimism on the future of the DCU. Co-head of DC Studios Peter Safran recently said that they remain confident in the vision of the DCU, telling the New York Times “While ‘Supergirl’ didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in.”
This seems to track, as DC Studios currently has a ton of projects in the works. However, as far as a Supergirl 2 is concerned, it is probably for the best to hold off. It’s clear that this film didn’t resonate with many as much as DC had hoped, and if a sequel was ever in the works, it’d be smart to hold off on it. Instead, DC could take a page out of Marvel’s book, and slowly get audiences introduced to Kara more through other crossovers before finally bringing her back for her own sequel.
As it stands, it seems like that could be the plan. Alcock is set to return as Kara Zor-El in the upcoming Superman follow-up Man of Tomorrow. Just how big her role is in that remains unknown, but getting to see more of Kara and Clark’s relationship, while also seeing a more superpowered version of Supergirl, could go a long way in making fans excited about not only the character, but future movies featuring her should one be made.
