Netflix and the creators of Stranger Things addressed the record-breaking success of the show’s fifth season following its premiere. The team reflected on the milestone as Season 5 delivered the biggest debut for an English-language series in the platform’s history.
Stranger Things Season 5’s massive viewership numbers revealed
In its first five days of streaming, Stranger Things Season 5 garnered 59.6 million views on Netflix. This makes it the biggest premiere week ever for an English-language series on the platform, surpassing all previous titles in that category.

The viewership total places Season 5 as the third-best overall Netflix debut, following only Seasons 2 and 3 of Squid Game, the Korean sci-fi series. Netflix confirmed via its official X account: “Stranger Things 5 is the #1 SHOW IN THE WORLD. With 59.6 million views, it also boasts the biggest premiere week ever for an English language show in the history of Netflix.”
Season 5 outperformed the Season 4 debut by a wide margin. In 2022, Netflix measured watch time in hours rather than views. Season 4 recorded 287 million hours watched in its first three days. That equals about 22 million views. In comparison, Season 5 logged 59.6 million views in five days — a 171% increase.
Netflix has released only the first four episodes of Season 5. It plans to release three more on December 25. The series finale will arrive on December 31. This staggered rollout will likely keep the show near the top of Netflix’s charts through the end of the year.
Stranger Things Season 5’s success pushed all previous seasons of Stranger Things back into Netflix’s Top 10 between November 24 and 30. Season 5 led the chart at No. 1, while Season 1 ranked No. 3 with 8.9 million views. Season 4 followed at No. 5 with 6.1 million, Season 2 placed at No. 6 with 5.6 million, and Season 3 landed at No. 8 with 4.6 million views.
