Star Trek: The Best Chief Engineer From Every Series, Ranked by Resourcefulness

Every Star Trek series has featured a defining chief engineer who ensures the ship is up and running and at maximum capacity to handle any scenario. From Scotty to La Forge to Torres, the franchise has given some incredible technical officers who make the technobabble accessible and are a godsend to the crew.

This countdown measures resourcefulness: how well each character solved problems with limited tools, time, or support, rather than raw technical genius or popularity alone. Priority went to characters who worked without a starbase nearby, jury-rigged solutions under pressure, or pioneered technology with no manual to follow.

10. Andy Billups’ Steady Hand Keeps the USS Cerritos Together

Andy Billups held together the USS Cerritos with his steady hands. In Lower Decks, the chief engineer was constantly under-resourced and had to keep it running through minor disasters. The ‘second contact’ ship was not always well-equipped like the Enterprise ships, but Billups made it work.

He is a capable, good-natured leader who mentors junior engineers without ever losing his patience. But the show’s comedic, background-focused format means Billups is rarely put through the kind of high-stakes, franchise-defining crisis that showcases true improvisation. He ranks low because his work is often implied off-screen and we rarely get to see him in action.

9. Kelvin Timeline Scotty is a Miracle Worker

J.J. Abrams’ rebooted Kelvin timeline sees Simon Pegg’s Scotty actually use the transwarp beam after Ambassador Spock gave him the equation. He also improvised the Enterprise’s escape from Nero’s Narada with makeshift tools and an alien sidekick.

Kelvin Scotty is clever and fast-thinking, but he spends the trilogy leaning on borrowed knowledge from his older self rather than generating breakthroughs independently

8. Hemmer Made the Ultimate Sacrifice in SNW

As part of the Aenar species, Hemmer has many physical challenges stacked against him, but the chief engineer triumphs through it all. Technically, Hemmer is blind and mostly uses intuition and heightened senses to navigate everything. However, in Strange New Worlds, he displays his resourcefulness in multiple episodes and sails the Enterprise through.

Hemmer sacrifices himself as the warp core was destabilizing and dies at the end of season one. His one-season run is one of the reasons why he ranks so low, because his skills did not get enough screen time to prove. He was also more privileged than other engineers on the list, as he usually had more resources, with the Enterprise being well-equipped.

7. Jankom Pog is an Improv Genius

An eccentric teenage Tellarite, Jankom Pog became engineer of the USS Protostar when he and fellow young prisoners at the Tars Lamora colony stole the ship to find refuge in the Federation. His improvisational engineering wizardry was key to the Protostar’s success, aided by a multipurpose cybernetic implant that replaced his right hand.

He ranks at the mid-table position because Pog had no Starfleet training and still managed to work with a stolen ship.

6. Wisecracking Jett Reno is as Unconventional as it Gets in Star Trek

A fan-favorite, Jett Reno is known for her wisecracking dialogue, but she is incredibly adept at solving technical problems. Introduced as an engineer who survived alone for months after a crash, Reno favors blunt, unconventional fixes over textbook procedure and is not afraid to cannibalize equipment mid-crisis.

However, she is mostly in a supporting role and does not usually come to the forefront. That is why she does not rank higher.

5. Geordie La Forge Can Save the Enterprise out of Any Situation

Geordie La Forge was promoted to chief engineer in season 2 of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Blind from birth, La Forge relies on the VISOR technology, atleast in the series, but his resourcefulness is unmatched. He restored the Enterprise-D after the crash on Veridan III.

La Forge usually worked with a fully-staffed, well-supplied flagship behind him, which is why he lands at the midpoint despite his brilliance.

4. Miles O’Brien Kept DS9 and Defiant Running During Wartime

Miles O’Brien cut his teeth in the transporter room aboard the Enterprise-D before taking charge of engineering on a decaying Cardassian space station. Unlike his peers, O’Brien inherited hostile, unfamiliar technology rather than a ship built by his own government, and he spent the Dominion War keeping Deep Space Nine and the USS Defiant functional under siege with minimal outside support.

3. B’Elanna Torres Was Able to Get a Ship Home Alone

B’Elanna Torres was thrust into the role of chief engineer after her Maquis population was merged with the Voyager. She is a half-Klingon and half-human, and her Klingon nature comes out when dealing with other officers. However, her talent and passion for engineering stand out. She had to deal with the Voyager’s return home.

Being stuck in an undiscovered quadrant, Torres had to use her knowledge and limited resources to navigate the Delta Quadrant and bring it back home.

2. Trip Tucker Laid the Foundation for Enterprise Engineers

As chief engineer of the NX-01, Trip Tucker couldn’t boast the same wealth of knowledge as Montgomery Scott or Geordi La Forge, since Enterprise is set before the Federation even exists, and going past Warp 4 made for a memorable day.

Of all the candidates in the franchise, only Tucker has real experience keeping a ship going against the odds, and the Enterprise’s flight through the Delphic Expanse speaks to his ability to perform makeshift repairs

1. Montgomery Scott is Star Trek’s Most Iconic Chief Engineer

Montgomery Scott in Star Trek | Paramount

‘Beam me up, Scotty,’ is one of the most iconic lines in the franchise. Chief engineer Montgomery Scott is Starfleet’s most iconic engineer, and he got the Enterprise out of all the jams that Captain Kirk got it mixed up in.

Decades later, after being suspended in a transporter buffer, he was revived by the crew of the Enterprise-D, where he reverse-engineered alien technology and helped save that ship too. Scotty’s experience across ships and legacy ranks him on top of all the others in the list.

Which Star Trek chief engineer do you think deserves a spot on the list? Comment below.
