The Seagate FireCuda Lightsaber Collection SSD is admittedly a pretty niche product. Many of you reading this may not even be familiar with what an M.2 SSD is. For those unaware, it is a form of solid state memory that can be added to a PC motherboard, or to some gaming consoles, to increase the storage capacity of said machine. It allows for some incredibly fast read/write speeds and comes in a very small form factor, being thinner and shorter than both a HDD and a standard SSD.
Now, the relatively small portion of the population who are aware of M.2 SSDs and use them, will know Seagate as a pretty reputable manufacturer of M.2s. However, the amount of crossover between that fanbase and the Star Wars fanbase seems somewhat questionable. With that being said, if you do happen to fall into this small sub-sect of geekdom, then this is an awesomely unique, eye catching, novelty device to that will look great and function well within your rig.
Not just a pretty face
There are two versions of the Seagate FireCuda Lightsaber Collection SSD available to purchase; one comes with a storage capacity of 1TB and the other comes with 2TB. The officially licensed Star Wars heatsink houses a FireCuda 530 PCIe Gen4 SSD. Although this particular M.2 SSD is more than two years old at the time of writing, it still holds a valid spot as one of the top PCIe Gen4 drives available on the consumer market.
The FireCuda 530 is capable of delivering speeds of up to 7.3GB/s in sequential reads. This impressive stat places it on the higher end of client-grade internal SSDs. Sequential writes are equally impressive, with the 1TB model able to reach up to 6GB/s and the 2TB model capable of 6.9GB/s. When testing, these toted figures all proved to be pretty consistent with my real-world results.

The Seagate FireCuda Lightsaber Collection SSD doesn’t compromise on random reads and writes either, with specs set at 1 million and 800K IOPS for the 2TB and 1TB models, respectively. Both capacities are expected to achieve up to 1 million IOPS in writes. The drive also boasts a Mean Time Between Failures (MBTF) rating of 1,800,000 hours, emphasizing its reliability and durability.
Before we get to the flashy aesthetics of the Seagate FireCuda Lightsaber Collection SSD heatsink, I’d like to briefly touch on its proficiency in terms of heat dissipation. The custom heatsink was created by EKWB, who are highly respected in the custom PC building community. This heatsink is able to efficiently prevent thermal throttling issues, ensuring high-quality performance over an extended period of time.
All three faceplates come packaged with the Seagate FireCuda Lightsaber Collection SSD.
When testing with a sustained load, I saw temperatures of around 39°C. When I tested the stock FireCuda 530 M.2 SSD without any heatsink applied, it reached temperatures of around 52°C, meaning that the heatsink is indeed doing its job.
Don’t try this at home
As a quick side note, I should state that while it is possible to remove the M.2 SSD from the heatsink housing unit, it is a finnicky process that requires a combination of precision and brute force. For the record, I would not recommend doing this at home, and it is not something I would have done if I didn’t need to perform this temperature test. This SSD can also be used with the PS5, however it too will involve removing the heatsink housing unit, which essentially defeats the purpose of the item.

Thankfully, the aesthetics are able to match up to the exquisite performance of the device. The Seagate FireCuda Lightsaber Collection SSD comes with three swappable faceplates, allowing users to switch between the iconic lightsabers of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, and Luke Skywalker respectively. The addressable RGB LED light panel that is located under the faceplate also enhances the visual flair, as it is this element that allows Luke’s lightsaber to be green, Vader’s to be red, and Obi-Wan’s to be blue. Or indeed, any other color that you would like as it is completely customisable.
This combination of the swappable faceplates and the addressable RGB is what really sets this SSD apart as a unique showpiece. The meticulous attention to detail seen in the respective lightsaber hilts is impressive, as is the overall build quality, thanks to the all-metal construction of the device. Also, swapping faceplates is thankfully straightforward, with the various covers ensuring a secure fit that prevents any internal movement within the rig post-installation.
I primarily opted for the Darth Vader plate, as it matched the black and red theme of my rig.
The vivid LED light that sits beneath the swappable cover spans the entire width of the device, creating a visually impressive look that Star Wars enthusiasts will go nuts for. The LED strip contains 10 separate lights, which allow for customizable lighting effects. The vibrant LED lights can be controlled via most RGB software applications, allowing for custom color schemes and animations. Users are required to connect a small 3-pronged cable to an RGB header on their motherboard in order to provide power to the device.
How much does it cost?
The Seagate FireCuda Lightsaber Collection SSD may be seen as being steeply priced for such a niche item, with the 2TB version setting buyers back $289.99 and the 1TB model coming in at $184.99. With that said however, considering this is such an impressive showpiece that is also able to deliver on performance, the expensive asking price begins to make a little bit more sense. It was the 2TB model that we were sent for this review.

It should also be noted that all versions come with a 5-year warranty included in the purchase price. On top of this, Seagate are also offering a complimentary 3-year subscription to Seagate’s Rescue Services. This inclusion means that users can rest assured that their data is protected from being lost or damaged, thanks to the data recovery service providing a reliable layer of protection.
In summary, the internal M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 Seagate FireCuda Lightsaber Collection SSD may not be for everyone. However, I have a funny feeling that it was never designed with the intention of being for everyone. For the select few who are able to appreciate this meticulously eye-catching, well-constructed device, this is a must-have. Sure, there are more advanced M.2 SSDs out there that may perform slightly better for a similar price, but can they claim a one-of-a-kind design officially endorsed by a galaxy far, far away?
