Sandra Bullock‘s Practical Magic 2 is tracking for a stronger opening weekend than its predecessor. The original Practical Magic was released on October 16, 1998. The sequel also features Nicole Kidman and is set 25 years after the prequel’s events.
The sequel is set to premiere on September 11, 2026. According to Deadline, the film is tracking for around $40 million domestically and $18 million to $23 million overseas across 77 territories. The expected global box office gross is between $58M and $63M. This prediction exceeds the prequel’s worldwide earnings of $51.3 million.
Moreover, Warner Bros. is reportedly projecting an opening of $30 million-$35 million from approximately 4,000 theaters domestically. According to Deadline’s report, the studio is confident that this number could be higher since the movie is a sequel to a fan favorite.
What critics are saying about Practical Magic 2
Although the movie has yet to have its theatrical run, early screening reviews for Practical Magic 2 are already out. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has earned a 35% Tomatometer score from 54 reviews at the time of writing this article.
While some found the sequel to Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman’s 1998 movie “pleasantly sweet,” others found it to be “too drawn out to be a fun hang.” For instance, Jim Schembri wrote, “Passable, but it’s overlong and cursed with sequelitis…clocks in as a lukewarm, somewhat cynical studio seat-filler that dutifully replicates the mediocrity of the 1998 movie.”
Additionally, Caroline Siede wrote, “A ’90s film about women coming together to take out a domestic abuser has become a franchise about how heteronormative romance is the most important thing in a woman’s life.”
In Practical Magic 2, Bullock and Kidman reprise their roles as Sally and Gillian Owens. The movie follows the Owens sisters as they confront the dark curse threatening to unravel their family once and for all. It is based on Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel The Book of Magic.
