Ryan Reynolds has an R-rated Star Wars pitch, and it’s not what you folks would expect. As per a report released on May 23, Reynolds floated a concept that leans mature without diving into vulgar territory. It’s less about shock and more about tone, offering a grittier lens.
As Star Wars explores darker storytelling via projects like Andor, there could be space for something a little edgier. Reynolds isn’t aiming to break the universe, just maybe bend the rules a tad bit. Here are more details.

Ryan Reynolds has pitched Disney an R-rated Star Wars project, and nope, it’s not full of F-bombs or lightsaber decapitations. Instead, he’s aiming for something deeper – grit, not gore.
On The Box Office podcast, Reynolds revealed his offbeat idea: an R-rated story set in the Star Wars universe, but not for shock value. He called it a “Trojan horse for emotion,” not vulgarity. The goal is simply to explore mature themes through lesser-known characters.
It doesn’t have to be overt, A+ characters, there’s a wide range of characters you could use. And I don’t mean R-rated to be vulgar, R-rated as a Trojan Horse for emotion.
And before anyone pictures Deadpool with a lightsaber… hold that thought. Reynolds reportedly has no plans to star. He just wants to produce, write, or help shape something from the sidelines.
His take: Surprise and scarcity are key to keeping massive franchises like Star Wars fresh. And with the franchise now everywhere on Disney+, that kind of creative curveball might be exactly what it needs.

Of course, the 48-year-old knows a thing or two about pushing boundaries. He just delivered Disney its first R-rated MCU title with Deadpool & Wolverine. So if anyone could sneak a bold new idea past the Mouse House, it’s him.
Meanwhile, the galaxy’s still expanding. The Mandalorian & Grogu is heading to the big screen (set to release on May 22, 2026), and Shawn Levy is directing Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling. Levy’s also a Reynolds collaborator, so maybe those R-rated Star Wars doors aren’t fully locked after all.

While promoting The Adam Project, the Deadpool star admitted that joining Star Wars would be “a real hard thing to say no to.” But before fans start picturing Wade Wilson, Reynolds was quick to clarify: it’s not something he’s actually thought about. He told Variety,
That would be a real hard thing to say no to, but honestly — I’m not making this up — it’s not something I’ve ever thought of.
However, with Disney owning both Deadpool and Star Wars, the idea doesn’t seem totally far-fetched. For now, he’s on a filmmaking break. But when he’s back, that Lucasfilm door might not stay closed for long.
