Justin Roiland, the co-creator of Rick and Morty, was charged with domestic violence in early 2020. He was subsequently dismissed from Adult Swim, and Disney’s 20th Television Animation also cut ties with him. He also resigned from Squanch Games. The charges were dismissed due to insufficient evidence.
However, the tale did not end there because in September 2023, new allegations were reported against him and this time of s*xual assault. He was accused of communicating online with underage girls, and one particular incident from 2019 came into the spotlight.
Rick and Morty co-creator’s 2019 scandal that came to light
NBC News reported that Justin Roiland had texted a 20-year-old woman on Tinder in March 2019. It was when he was in Boston for a gaming convention. The woman reported that though she did not watch Rick and Morty, she knew about the success of the show as well as the fact that Roiland was likely to be rich due to his fame.
Roiland texted her first, after which the woman suggested to
go shopping and have fun and ill give you a fashion show and we can get coffee and talk!?-anonymous 20-year-old woman
Roiland responded positively and suggested going for a drink. The woman told him that since she was 20, she couldn’t buy drinks, but was interested in meeting.

The same night, Roiland took the woman to a restaurant near the gaming convention and bought mixed drinks for her. The woman reportedly said that after two drinks, she was already feeling drunk, after which they left the restaurant to go shopping. Roiland bought her clothes and suggested that they go back to his hotel, to which she agreed.

Once both were in the hotel room, Roiland asked the woman to perform o*al s*x on him. She reported that she told him no, but Roiland kept persisting and even pushed her head towards his p**vate parts. At this point, she stopped resisting. In the interview, the woman admitted:
From the moment it happened, I knew that it was not OK. But I felt a lot of different feelings, like that it was my fault. I felt guilty for asking him to buy me stuff. I felt maybe I owed it to him. And I was embarrassed-anonymous 20-year-old woman
It was in June 2019 that the woman confronted Roiland again about what had happened that night.
The s*xual stuff that happened with us was not handled by you in the best way and i just want you to take that into account in future dates. I know it was not black or white but verbal consent is important.-anonymous 20-year-old woman
In the texts that followed, Roiland could be seen apologizing and asking if he had not gotten consent. The woman later admitted in the interview:
I just didn’t want him to get angry, I was scared to accuse him of what he did.-anonymous 20-year-old woman

Roiland’s attorney never addressed the allegation of forced o*al s*x and rather wrote that the woman had asked Roiland to buy her clothes and had even offered to sell her p**nographic videos to him. This had left Roiland feeling as if he was duped and taken advantage of.
The woman reported that she did ask him to buy her clothes, after which it was Roiland who had expressed interest in her videos. She had wanted to charge him double the price of what she typically charged, but never really got to sell or send him any of the content.
While the accusations have not been proven to be true, Roiland’s attorney’s complete ignorance of her actual report about s*xual misconduct is unsettling. Instead, the team focused on the buying and selling of p**nographic videos. This does not spare Roiland of the suspicions that have been aroused in the minds of people.
The Rick and Morty animation is currently available to stream on Adult Swim.
