Ahead of the theatrical release of Predator: Badlands on November 7, Marvel Comics has announced that the upcoming action sci-fi movie will receive a tie-in prequel comic. Described as a prelude to the movie’s story, the one-shot comic is written by Ethan Sacks (Star Wars: Bounty Hunters), with director Dan Trachtenberg also set to write the foreword for the issue. It is set to be published on November 12.
“For a writer who grew up a lifelong fan of the Predator franchise, there is no bigger game than the chance to hunt with the Yautja,” Sacks shared. “Working hand in hand with the filmmakers behind Predator: Badlands, we made sure this prequel story fits into the cinematic saga like a puzzle piece. It’s going to give fans a deeper, richer experience – especially when they get to feast their eyes on Elvin Ching’s art.”
What is the Predator: Badlands prequel comic about?
“In the one-shot, a young Yautja warrior is given a seemingly simple task by his father: retrieve a piece of technology from a derelict spaceship that crashed years ago. Inside, however, an ancient and deadly threat lies in wait,” reads the comic’s official synopsis.
Titled Predator: Badlands #1, the prequel comic is illustrated by Elvin Ching in his Marvel Comics debut. It also hails from comic book inker Oren Junior and artist Juan Ferreyra, with the latter creating the issue’s cover art. This marks the latest entry to the Predator comic book series following the recent launches of Predator Kills the Marvel Universe and Predator: Black, White & Blood.
Trachtenberg added, “Badlands is the first Predator movie to draw inspiration so heavily from the comic books. So it’s with great delight that you and I now get to look at splash pages, from the minds of Ethan and Elvin, of a formative adventure for our characters that serves as a perfect companion to the film. Dek kicking ass in his very own comic book is a dream come true.”
Predator: Badlands is directed and produced by Trachtenberg, who co-wrote the screenplay with Patrick Aison based on the characters by Jim Thomas and John Thomas. The cast is led by Elle Fanning as a young android named Thia and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi as Dek. It is produced by John Davis, Marc Toberoff, Ben Rosenblatt, and Brent O’Connor.
