Wu-Tang Clan co-founder Oliver Power Grant has passed away at the age of 52 on February 23. Hip-hop music site Okayplayer took to IG, announcing Power’s passing. As of writing, however, the details behind Wu-Tang Clan’s founding member and the Wu Wear clothing line are yet to be disclosed.
A driving force behind one of hip-hop’s most influential movements, Power helped build a global legacy rooted in independence, ownership, and culture. His belief in creative control and community empowerment helped shape not only a group, but a dynasty that changed music forever.
Several notable figures, including Method Man, RZA, GZA, and Raekwon, chimed in to pay tribute to Power’s legacy (via Billboard). From helping push one of the most influential hip-hop groups into the mainstream to building the successful Wu Wear clothing line, his impact on music and culture was undeniable.
Oliver Power Helped Shape Wu-Tang Clan’s Rise
While he wasn’t the creative lead of the crew, Power, who grew up alongside several key Wu-Tang Clan figures like RZA, Ghostface, Method Man, etc, was pivotal when it came to the hip-hop group’s other ventures.

From helping them secure a deal with Loud Records that preserved their autonomy, as each member was free to sign solo contracts elsewhere, to investing his own money during the group’s early days, Power’s contribution went beyond that of a traditional producer. Back in 2011, Power told Passion of the Weiss:
I think I came with most of the money. I was more the financial guy and Ghost and RZA were the guys that had the musical talent…Everything that we learned was hard knock life, you figure it out as you go along, and take cues from those that are actively doing things. A lot of it was trial and error.
Power was just as crucial to Wu-Tang Clan’s success as the group’s frontline performers, if not even more so, as it was his vision that shaped the hip-hop group as a behemoth, both on and off stage.
