Former Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Sunday Dare, has advised President Bola Tinubu-led federal government to focus on harnessing the financial assets of Nigerians in the diaspora.
Sunday Dare said this on Thursday while reacting to foreign remittance reports of African countries for the fiscal year 2023.
In the report, Nigerians in diaspora remitted a total of $19.55 billion. Nigeria was followed by Egypt, with total remittance of $19.53 billion. Moroccans in diaspora remitted $11.75 billion.
Another West African country, Ghana; Ghanaians remitted $4.63 billion. Kenyans remitted $4.16 billion. Zimbabwe citizens in diaspora remitted $3.08 billion. Senegal citizens remitted $2.94 billion.
Other countries in the top ten include Tunisia with a total remittance of $2.94 billion. Algeria with a total remittance of $1.86 billion and the Democratic Republic of Congo with a total remittance of $1.4 billion.
Commenting on the World Bank 2023 remittance report, streamlined to top ten African countries with highest remittances from citizens in diaspora by Nairametrics, Dare described Nigerians in diaspora as assets.
He advised the federal government to identify ways of ensuring the massive remittance could be to the advantage of the government, especially the ones coming from Nigeria’s banking system.
“Nigeria tops them all. There must be some way the Federal Government can tap into these massive funds from remittances, especially the ones that come through the banking system. Nigeria Diaspora is an asset.” Dare said.
