Netflix’s One Piece Won’t Sail in 2026 After Another Disappointing Update

Jump Festa 2026 has been both rewarding and disappointing for the One Piece fans. While a massive announcement regarding the Laugh Tale was made by Oda-san, one of the highly anticipated matters was left unaddressed, yet again, even after 3 years of its announcement. Yes, this is about Netflix’s remake of the One Piece anime series.

Netflix’s One Piece Anime Remake Left Unaddressed Even After 3 Years

Fans of the One Piece series were pretty hyped for the Jump Festa 2026, especially because of all the new updates they were going to get from the event. While many new updates were released by the mangaka Eiichiro Oda himself, one of the main things the fans were hoping to hear about was again left unsaid:

The Netflix remake of the One Piece series, titled The One Piece, was first announced at Jump Festa 2024 (December 2023). Last year, concept art and production details for The One Piece were shared at the One Piece Day 2024 event in Japan. Even recently, artwork from the Netflix anime was made available at the official One Piece store in Japan.

Kyoji Asano, the character designer for The One Piece, assured fans that development on the Netflix reboot was still being made, albeit at a slower pace than expected. In mid-June, Asano said he was actively working on some cuts for The One Piece. Alas, it has been too slow, and no one has really addressed the reason behind such a lag in production.

No new update of the release timeline or a release date has been mentioned by anyone after Asano’s remarks. This is one of the prime reasons the unaddressed fact at Jump Festa 2026 felt so disappointing, as many fans were highly anticipating a “releasing soon” notion.

How Different Will The One Piece Remake Be From The Original?

While the original One Piece series was produced by Toei Animation, the new remake by Netflix is a tie-up production with the WIT Studio. WIT Studio is the maker of several renowned anime series like Attack on Titan Seasons 1-3, Spy X Family, Mushoku Tensei, and Vinland Saga Season 1.

To start off, the animation quality will be substantially different from what we are used to in the original series. It makes sense as one was produced in 1999, and the remake is being produced very recently with much better equipment and high animation standards.

Additionally, the original series is an ongoing series of episodes with no seasonal division in between, which was a recurring theme in older series. A recent remake indicates the seasonal division between the narrative and episodes with either the usual episode count of 12 or 24 episodes per season, or any other specific number.

Lastly, a remake offers the animation studio the room to be picky with their choice of content. Many fillers that they feel were unnecessary could be omitted from the new production and could be more centred towards following the main plot. There is going to be a lot of should-be’s and could-be’s until we get to know more in the future, hopefully soon.

Meanwhile, here are some pieces of information about the original One Piece anime series:
