‘Murder 101’: Everything We Know About Prime Video’s Docuseries Based on Hit Podcast
Spread the love

True crime fans have a brand new docuseries heading their way. Prime Video’s upcoming show, Murder 101, is based on the popular true crime podcast of the same name from KT Studios and iHeart Media. Interestingly, no seasoned detectives or crime journalists are investigating the crime in this show. Instead, the detectives here are high school students.

The series follows a small-town Tennessee sociology class, where a teacher pushes his students to dig into a decades-old cold case. The show premiered its first episode at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Here’s everything you need to know about the series.

Murder 101 Cast & Crew: Who Is Behind the Show?

Since Murder 101 is a docuseries, its real cast is the people at the center of the story. High school sociology teacher Alex Campbell and his students appear in front of the camera. Behind the camera, though, there’s serious talent involved. The series is directed by Stacey Lee, known for the documentary Secrets of Hillsong.

Prime Video’s official page of the series already brags about the involvement of the talent behind Marvel’s Spider-Man trilogy. Jon Watts, the director of the movies, is serving as an executive producer alongside Dianne McGunigle and Stephanie Lydecker, whose KT Studios co-created the original podcast. The show is produced by KT Studios and Freshman Year.

Murder 101 Plot: What Is the Hit Podcast-Based Series About?

The setting of the show is Elizabethton High School in Tennessee. Murder 101 follows a high school sociology class that takes on a real unsolved mystery. Under the guidance of their teacher, Alex Campbell, the students start investigating the Redhead Murders, a string of unsolved killings that made headlines across the American South decades ago before slowly fading from public memory.

The victims, many of them women with red hair, were found along highways in the 1980s and largely forgotten by the system. What begins as a classroom assignment turns into a dark and emotional journey for the students, who endure it to seek justice for the victims.

The students chase new leads, connect clues that were overlooked for years, and bring fresh attention to the victims. Director Stacey Lee explained (via Amazon MGM Studios press release):

At its heart, Murder 101 is a story about what happens when someone believes young people are capable of extraordinary things. Mr. Campbell didn’t just create a class; he created a space where students could think critically, engage deeply, and contribute to something bigger than themselves.

More than a true crime series, the show is also expected to explore how a great teacher can change the way students see themselves. There will surely be some out-of-textbook lessons for both the students involved and the viewers.

Murder 101 Trailer: Is There a Trailer Available?

Yes, the official trailer is out now. Prime Video released it on its official YouTube channel on June 16, 2026, along with the key art and premiere date announcement. The trailer sets up the show’s unusual hook right away, where the teacher assigns his students coursework that is about a decades-old cold case.

We see Mr. Campbell guiding them through evidence, interviews, and the emotional responses of the students as they embark on the journey. There is less of the eerie true crime vibe and more of the surprisingly hopeful energy of students.
