Director Simon McQuoid discussed the reason behind Mortal Kombat 2’s release date delay. He also shared how the sequel expands on the original film’s tone, scope, and action while setting the stage for the franchise’s next chapter.

Simon McQuoid attributes Mortal Kombat 2 release date delay to first movie’s success

At New York Comic Con, director Simon McQuoid announced Mortal Kombat 2 will release on May 16, 2026. He explained the shift occurred because the first film’s success turned the sequel into “a massive summer blockbuster.” “Every time people have seen this movie, it’s gained momentum,” McQuoid added (via The Hollywood Reporter). “We’ve created a massive summer blockbuster, so I think we should all be proud of the fact that Mortal Kombat II and the franchise itself is going to kick off next year.” He described the delay as the result of being “a victim of our own success.”

Screenwriter Jeremy Slater confirmed that Warner Bros. and New Line have already greenlit Mortal Kombat III, telling fans to “show up to theaters next summer and make sure they know there’s an audience for this movie.”

McQuoid said the sequel builds on the tone of the first film’s opening sequence, stating, “We felt that we just scratched the surface. There is so much to Mortal Kombat, to the lore, so much to work with that I thought we could just expand everything onto an even greater scale.”

Mortal Kombat 2 to have twice as many fight scenes as first movie

McQuoid stated that Mortal Kombat II will feature “twice as many fights as the first film.” He explained that the tournament serves as a framework for the intersecting storylines. “All of our characters, their journeys have to go through the tournament. We wanted to do that in a way that was visually massive, interesting, but has the variety that Mortal Kombat always has,” he said.

Slater noted that the sequel avoids a predictable structure: “A lot of traditional fighting tournament movies, there’s a fight and then you can go to the bathroom. We didn’t want that structure.”

The film will debut in IMAX, with McQuoid adding that it includes “little bits of joy” exclusive to IMAX screenings. Karl Urban described his character, Johnny Cage, as “a very dispirited character” whose journey transforms him “into a true champion of Earth Realm.” Slater added, “It was fun to start him at a lower place and watch him become the Johnny Cage we know and love.”
