Written by Disney has dropped the second official trailer for the Moana live-action remake, timed with the beginning of ticket sales. The trailer gives a much more in-depth look at the film than the first trailer, released back in March 2026, which focused primarily on Moana and Maui’s meeting.
This trailer offers the fullest look yet at what to expect from the live-action adaptation when it opens in theaters on July 10, 2026, reveals the return of a major cast member, and gives viewers a more detailed sense of what the film will look like.
The trailer features Catherine Laga’aia in her feature film debut as Moana, alongside Dwayne Johnson, who reprises his role as Maui from the 2016 animated version. The film is directed by Thomas Kail in his feature directorial debut, written by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, and produced by Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, Beau Flynn, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Principal photography for the film took place in Atlanta and Hawaii between July and November 2024.
Dwayne Johnson’s First Look As Maui In Moana Live-Action Remake Revealed
The second trailer wastes no time showcasing Johnson’s performance as Maui. This time, the footage begins with Maui using his shapeshifting powers, quickly morphing into a whale, then an iguana, and finally a beetle, all while still giving off that undeniable sense of confidence. A live-action version of Maui’s musical number, “You’re Welcome,” is also included, with Johnson singing and dancing on his now-deserted island.
The trailer also features another version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “We Know the Way” while showing additional clips from the film. As noted in the trailer and confirmed in the official press release, it also signals the return of Jemaine Clement to voice Tamatoa, the oversized purple crab from the animated film.
One clip from the trailer shows Tamatoa snapping up Moana as she tries to avoid him and asking her to concentrate on one of his eyes while he’s talking to her, a direct callback to the original.
The plot of the live-action version of Moana remains largely similar to the animated film, with Moana leaving her home island of Motunui at the behest of the ocean and sailing past the barrier reef alongside Maui on a journey that will ultimately benefit her people. Aside from some small dialogue modifications seen in the trailer, the overall plot appears to remain relatively the same.
