The new Resident Evil movie’s R rating marks a franchise first. The MPAA lists “strong bloody violence, gore, and language throughout” among its reasons.
No previous live-action Resident Evil movie had “bloody violence” listed among its R-rating reasons. The 2002 original was rated R for “strong sci-fi/horror violence, language, and brief sexuality/nudity.” Resident Evil: Apocalypse received its R rating for “strong violence/gore and language,” while Extinction cited “strong horror violence, some nudity and language.” Afterlife and The Final Chapter also carried R ratings with further descriptions. That makes the new classification different from the earlier entries.
Zach Cregger directs the latest film based on the popular video game series. He has aimed to capture the feeling of playing the games. In the official featurette, he explained how they influenced his approach to filmmaking. He said, “I happen to worship these Resident Evil games and pull a lot of inspiration from the experience of playing them.”
What is the new Resident Evil movie about and when does it hit theaters?
The story centers on Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, a medical courier caught in an outbreak. His delivery job puts him at the center of a fight for survival. Sony describes the project as an original story rather than an adaptation of one specific game.
Cregger has added several gameplay-inspired mechanics to the movie. These include weapon progression, healing sprays, herbs, typewriters, and padlocked doors. First-person sequences will also recreate the perspective associated with the games.
Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser are part of the main cast alongside Abrams. Cregger co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten, in addition to directing. Sony Pictures, Constantin Film, and Davis Films are producing the project.
Resident Evil will open in theaters on September 18, 2026. The movie will also screen in IMAX locations. The audience now has a better idea of the film’s content due to its confirmed rating.
