Twenty years after Malcolm’s family drove him to near-insanity, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair returns with just four episodes and no clear future beyond that. Hulu hasn’t announced a Season 2, and as creator Linwood Boomer put it, it all “depends on how it does” (via Collider).
The revival was planned as a four-episode limited run, with only four episodes ordered instead of a full reboot, but it doesn’t fully close the door. The cast has been open to returning, and the finale hints at a continuation through Malcolm’s daughter. Season 2 isn’t confirmed, but it isn’t off the table.
Malcolm in the Middle Cast Open to Return as Hulu Plans Unclear
Bryan Cranston told Frankie Muniz at dinner that there’s “not a character that I’ve played that I want to revisit more than Hal” (via Deadline). Muniz told Consequence that returning felt so natural that “maybe I’ve become Malcolm.” Justin Berfield came out of retirement entirely to reprise Reese.
Even Boomer, who spent years refusing to return without a good idea, had a great experience, telling Collider that Disney and 20th were “terrific” and that the whole production was a genuinely positive working environment.
The core writing team is also back. Boomer, along with Alan J. Higgins, Michael Glouberman, Matthew Carlson, and Gary Murphy, all returned for Life’s Still Unfair, so the original creative backbone is still there and working.
What’s unclear is Hulu’s next move. The network hasn’t said yes or no on Season 2, and Boomer made it clear the decision is entirely out of his hands. Per Collider, he said there’s “a certain number” that has to hit, and he doesn’t even know what that number is or what it’s measuring.
Actual streaming data from Hulu won’t be available for weeks, but early reception is mostly positive. The revival rose from 69% to 81% on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 66 on Metacritic (as of April 10, 2026), with our review scoring it an 8/10. If the viewership data meets expectations, a Season 2 becomes more likely.
Life’s Still Unfair Season 2 or a Leah Spinoff: What’s Next

In an EW cover story, Jane Kaczmarek said a spinoff centered on Malcolm’s daughter is “a whole new set of characters and circumstances that are ripe.” Tracy Katsky called Keeley Karsten someone who could “absolutely hold a show.” Boomer went further, calling Karsten “an undiscovered star“, adding:
As a performer, she has this crazy potential that would be silly for show business not to use.
The revival’s finale itself sets up a Malcolm-and-Leah future. It feels like the team was thinking beyond four episodes. Whether that turns into a full Season 2, a Leah spinoff, or something in between is still unclear.
Muniz is currently focused on NASCAR full-time but told EW he’s open to acting projects down the line. Erik Per Sullivan isn’t returning, as he left acting in 2010. So, a full ensemble Season 2 identical to Life’s Still Unfair is the least likely path forward.
What they’ve clearly set up, though, is a Leah spinoff, and based on what they’ve said, that’s the direction they’re most excited about.
