AMC has finally greenlit the Point Break sequel. The eight-part series is based on the 1991 surf heist thriller, featuring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze in the lead roles. According to Deadline, AMC is teaming up with French broadcaster Canal+ for the new series.
The Point Break TV series will release in the U.S. via AMC and its sister streamer AMC+. At the same time, Canal+ will air it in France and across Europe, Africa, and Asia on its pay service. Studiocanal, which is one of its sister banners, will distribute the series globally.
Back in December 2025, Deadline first reported on a series in development based on the 1991 Keanu Reeves hit. Now, the outlet has confirmed that the Point Break series will begin production in early 2027.
Speaking about the new development, Dan McDermott, the president of AMC Studios, told Deadline, “Start with one of the most entertaining and unforgettable action films ever made, add a powerhouse creative team and producing partners, massive fan interest that has been clear from the moment we announced the series was in development, and you get a greenlight we could not be more excited about.”

The upcoming series is set in the present day, around 35 years after the events of the original film. It is a continuation of the 1991 movie, rather than a remake. The TV sequel follows a new heist crew. In order to infiltrate them, the FBI must work with a former pro surfer with a troubled past.
The new criminals are connected to the notorious Ex-Presidents gang that appeared in the original film. They were a gang of Southern California surfers led by Bodhi. The crew wore masks of former U.S. Presidents such as Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and Lyndon Johnson, going around robbing banks. They quickly came onto the radar of the FBI, and Agent Johnny Utah went undercover to infiltrate the crew. The series will continue the legacy of the gang with a new generation of criminals.
The 1991 movie, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, featured Keanu Reeves as Johnny Utah, while Patrick Swayze starred as Bodhi. Dave Kalstein and Christopher C. Rogers, who will serve as showrunners for the series, discussed the cult status of the film. In a statement to Deadline, the duo said, “Point Break was the movie that rocked our worlds forever. It was this wild cinematic sermon on friendship, outlaws, and spirituality that struck our souls. As we got older, we realized it hit millions of people the same way. Point Break is more than just a movie—it’s a way of looking at the world.”

While Point Break is synonymous with Keanu Reeves, AMC has no confirmation about his return as Johnny Utah in the sequel series. In fact, the current logline suggests that the series will explore beyond the FBI agent at the center of the 1991 movie.
Point Break had a remake released in 2015 under an American-German-Chinese co-production. The remake, which is available to stream on Prime Video, features Luke Bracey as Reeves’ Utah and Édgar Ramírez as Swayze’s Bodhi. Alcon Television Group, which was behind the 2015 remake, will also produce the upcoming sequel series.
Kalstein and Rogers, who are the executive producers, added, “We are so honored to be carrying this legacy forward with Alcon, AMC, and Studiocanal. We’re putting together a series that will inspire audiences everywhere to seek The Ultimate.”
With AMC now officially moving forward with the sequel series, Point Break is getting another chapter three decades after Keanu Reeves’ original became a cult classic.
