Prime Video is putting together a show that may just grab two enormous fandoms at once. Fourth Wing, adapted from Rebecca Yarros’ record-breaking romantasy novel, is finally moving forward after years in development, and the team behind it has a great reputation.
Jonathan Nolan, who directed the first three episodes of Fallout, came aboard as an executive producer through Kilter Films when Amazon confirmed the series order in May. Readers of the book already have expectations for the show.
For non-readers, the story has everything HBO’s House of the Dragon viewers turn up for. There are dragons that choose their own riders, a military academy where cadets die in training, and a kingdom where your family name decides whether you survive the year.
On the other hand, Netflix viewers would love this story as it has what turned Bridgerton into a phenomenon. It is a slow-burn fantasy with an enemies-to-lovers romance that has genuine heat at its center. Prime Video now has the dragons and the desire that would reel viewers in.

Rebecca Yarros’ Fourth Wing follows 20-year-old Violet Sorrengail, who is pushed by her mother, a general, into the brutal Basgiath War College. She has to train as a dragon rider in the kingdom of Navarre.
However, she was raised to be a scribe. She is physically fragile, and the college is the sort of place where cadets die long before they ever reach a dragon. She joins hundreds of candidates competing to become the elite of Navarre. And bonding with a dragon is her only chance. That is the House of the Dragon half of the story.
The Bridgerton half arrives with Xaden Riorson, the son of an executed rebel leader. Their relationship turned the book into a BookTok explosion back in 2023. Interestingly, Prime Video has plenty to explore in this world.
The Empyrean series began with Fourth Wing in 2023, followed by Iron Flame later that year, and Onyx Storm in January 2025. Yarros has planned it as a five-book run. Amazon holds the rights to the whole thing. On paper, it is a multi-season show. But practically, it all rests on how the first season performs.

Fourth Wing has no official release date or cast announced yet. What it has is a solid team behind it. Jonathan Nolan is one name on a stacked list. Lisa Joy, his partner and co-founder of Kilter Films, is directing the pilot and executive producing alongside him and Athena Wickham.
The three of them ran Fallout together, a show that broke streaming records and pulled 17 Emmy nominations in its first season. While Nolan directed the opening three episodes of that show, Joy directed the sixth episode of Season 2.
Meredith Averill is adapting the novels and serving as showrunner and executive producer. Her credits include The Haunting of Hill House, Locke & Key, and Wednesday, which should reassure anyone worried about tone.
Then there’s the producing muscle. Michael B. Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo executive produce through Outlier Society, Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark through Premeditated Productions, and Yarros herself is an executive producer. Oscar-winner Jordan was present onstage at Amazon’s Upfront when the show was announced (via Amazon MGM Press).
