Many have joked about Aquaman and his place in the Justice League. However, even if his powers were limited to talking to fish (which they are not) he still wields significant political and magical power as King of Atlantis. His current comic, and the events that made him the Avatar of The Blue, heightened his importance. Yet his most recent adventure truly proved his power.
Written by Jeremy Adams, with art by John Timms, Emperor Aquaman #16 follows Arthur Curry’s exploits in expanding his influence. Following the DC K.O. tournament, Arthur had a vision that he must construct a series of structures he called “lighthouses” across the universe. These would help him connect several aquatic alien worlds through The Blue and better sense any coming disasters.

With a small team of loyal followers (including the Wonder Twins‘ Zan) Aquaman traveled to one such world. They were greeted by the ant-like inhabitants, who had already built a lighthouse according to a prophecy regarding the Atlantean king’s arrival. However, the envoys soon realized that their hosts were also host to a race of parasites. One that schemed to take them over and move on Earth.
How Aquaman saved an entire world
Faced with an entire world whose population were enslaved by a hive mind, Aquaman’s options were limited. He had no desire to hurt the innocent hosts. Yet he had no clear way of attacking the parasites directly with his telepathy. However, an inspired idea and some basic science allowed him to attack the parasites using his new powers. Specifically, his ability as Avatar of the Blue to control the flow of all water.

While questioning one parasite, Aquaman learned they had gone dormant as their world froze over. With that knowledge, he used the water within every infected host to flush the parasites out. He then slowed the flow of water around them on a molecular level, freezing every parasite in an instant.
Aquaman has shown increased stamina and heightened senses since acquiring his new powers. However, this feat, comparable to some things Swamp Thing has done as Avatar of the Green, truly showcases his new abilities. Now able to effect change on a global scale instantly, there is no doubt Arthur Curry deserves a place on the Justice League.
Emperor Aquaman #16 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
