Helldivers 2 has become one of Sony’s biggest successes in recent years, and during CES 2025, it was confirmed that Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are teaming up for a live-action adaptation. Since then, anticipation has been building about who would lead the charge to bring managed democracy to the big screen.
It’s now confirmed that Jason Momoa will take on the role. He’s an actor who has established himself with roles in iconic movies such as Aquaman, Minecraft Movie, Fast X, and more. Considering his screen presence, he’s quite literally the best fit for the chaotic world of Helldivers.

Alongside confirming Momoa’s involvement in the project, Sony has also revealed that the film is supposed to release on November 10, 2027. That’s a date still months away, but a project of this scale needs all the time it can get to fully capture the game’s vibe. If it’s done well, it could prove to be a turning point for Helldivers, Arrowhead, and Sony.
Momoa would be working alongside director Justin Lin, who was confirmed for the project a while ago. He’s best known for directing the Fast and Furious franchise, but he also has sci-fi experience, having directed Star Trek Beyond. This makes him the best choice to take Helldivers to the big screen.

While Momoa’s casting as the lead in the Helldivers movie has been well received by fans on social media, the same can’t be said for director Lin. When Sony announced that Lin would command the adaptation, there was a lot of criticism, with many fans stating that the movie would be a failure
This was primarily due to reports by The Hollywood Reporter, which stated that Lin wasn’t a gamer and that he viewed that as a strength when developing his own take on the source material. This detail simply worried many in the community, who worried the film might be yet another underwhelming video game adaptation.
However, Arrowhead Game Studios CEO Shams Jorjani has publicly voiced his support for Lin. While chatting on the game’s official Discord server, Jorjani said he has full confidence in the director and praised him for his work on Star Trek Beyond. When the game’s creators stand behind the filmmaker, we have reason to feel more optimistic about the project.
